Lauterbrunnen to Schilthorn tickets advice please

Short summary – read this first

A traveler wants to explore from Lauterbrunnen to Schilthorn on Sunday, August 27, asking about the best ways to book their trip and ticket options. They plan to take various cable cars and hikes along the way and seek clarity on time restrictions and costs for booking multiple legs of the journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the weather forecast 3 to 5 days before your trip to ensure good conditions for your mountain excursion.
  • Purchase tickets for each leg of the journey separately or ask at the counter for a round trip option; prices are usually the same either way.
  • Booking tickets in advance may help you avoid long queues, but you can also buy them early in the day if you prefer last-minute decisions.

I would like to travel from Lauterbrunnen to Schilthorn via Grutschalp and Murren on the way to the top. I would like to descend with a stop in Birg, followed by cable car to Murren, hike to Gimmelwald and cable car to Stechelberg and Post bus back to Lauterbrunnen. I will not have a Swiss rail pass and will be travelling on Sunday August 27. My questions are:

    1. Is it best to book all that in advance given the date? How soon? Or can I wait till that day if I start early enough in the morning?

    2. Does the ticket for each leg of the trip up and down have time restrictions or can I board any cable car or train at any time? When I look at the timetable to book, I am asked to select a time. I’d like to walk around Murren and Gimmelwald and don’t want to be rushed.

    3. If I book it all in advance, do I book each leg of the journey individually, or is there an option somewhere to book round trip or return in one booking? Is it the same cost to book each leg individually or is there a discount for booking round trip?

    Thank you!!

    Hi Blblake,

It’s usually advisable to check the weather forecast and mountain webcams before purchasing your mountain excursion tickets. Local weather forecast is usually reliable about 3 to 5 days ahead, so plan to purchase your tickets a few days in advance or early in the day to avoid long queues. You can find links to local weather forecast here: http://www.myswissalps.com/weather/forecast

You can find information about tickets to Schilthorn here: http://www.myswissalps.com/schilthorn/tickets. You can either purchase a single or return ticket and this is valid the whole day. If you wish to do the loop (ascending via Stechelberg and returning via Mürren-Grutschalp), you can purchase the ticket separately or buy the return ticket directly from the counter. Just tell the staff at the counter about your plans so they can issue you the correct tickets. The ticket prices are usually fixed regardless if you book a single or a return trip.

Let us know if you need further info.

    regards,

    Anna
