Train from Lauterbrunnen, hike Winteregg to Murren

AnonymousInactive77265 posts26 February 2019 at 15:06:21 #820119
i read from somewhere that the hike from Winteregg to Murren is very scenic. what the author did was took a train to Winteregg restaurant, had their meals, and hike to Murren, and probably train down back to Lauterbrunnen.
will it make sense to train straight from Lauterbrunnen to Murren, and hike back to Winteregg restaurant, and train down?
i presume both of the above is possible? how much time will i need to set aside for the hike for a family with 2 kids around 9 years old?

Hi Leecsjimmy, welcome to MySwissAlps!
I recommend to do the full hike from Grütschalp to Mürren. All details can be found here: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/gruetschalp-muerren.
“I very much appreciated the suggestions of where to go based on our priorities of spending time in nature and away from crowds. I also appreciated the train guidance.”

Pleaes let us know when you are traveling, as requested in the Forum rules:
http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/rules
That is helpful, because, during some times of the year, the restaurant at Winteregg may be closed. Also, the trail is usually open all year, and is an easy one, but, in the winter, it could be slippery.
Note the timetable in the link that Arno provided. You can see the details, including how frequently the services run. Note that some are cableways, others trains or buses.
Note that a map is also provided. I prefer this more detailed one:
map.search.ch/?pos=637144,157880&z=64 &poi=bergbahn,halteste lle,zug
Mouse over the station icons to get their official name.
I think you all will enjoy that walk, especially because of the splendid views of the Jungfrau massif as you walk toward Mürren.

I will be there around 21st September. Is that a good time?
As for the hike, I will be hiking with 2 kids. How much will I have to factor in from Grütschalp to mUrren?
I was just thinking, if the real scenic part is only from winteregg to mUrren I will do just that. But if it’s from Grütschalp to mUrren, I will seriously consider the entire hike if it’s not too long or difficult for the children.
UserInactive77265 postsReply 4 of 12 • 26 February 2019 at 23:54:26 #905023Late September is a good time. My 8 year old granddughter enjoyed the more spectacular walk from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg on approx. September 22nd, 2009.
This link gives details of the walk, which has the local nickname of “The Grannies’ WalK.”

See attached
The link that Arno gave you, plus the map that I linked, will let you judge the length of your planned hike, and his link gives the altitude change and difficulty.
Please take a look at that.
For really detailed altitude information, this map is good:

I did it when I was 7 in 1967 and again in 2017 (when I was 57…)
By the way the service from Lauterbrunnen is in two sections, a cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp, and a train from there to Murren via Winteregg.
The cable car replaced a funicular which was abandoned a few years ago because the mountainside shifts a bit from time to time making maintaining the track difficult

UserInactive77265 postsReply 7 of 12 • 27 February 2019 at 13:26:38 #905026Hi Leecsjimmy –
Glad it helps.
I can’t plan my hikes without a map and an idea of what public transport to use at the beginning and end. I never plan on the last bus/ttrain/cable car.
In the mountains, some kind of mountain transport are part of the intercity network and tend to have longer hours than the ones on the ski slopes. But, if you are depending on either, make sure you know the time of the last trip out.
Unless one of your family has leg problems, I think you might find the walk from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg a special event to remember- if the weather is not cloudy. September is the best month for that.
Hiking time is listed for 1 hr and 30 minutes. It always takes me up to an hour longer, because i am constantly pausing to take photographs. My grandaughter really enjoyed, and her mother considered it the very best part of their week in Switzerland.

UserInactive77265 postsReply 8 of 12 • 28 February 2019 at 2:56:07 #905027We will be staying in Wengen, doing hikes in Wengen , mannlingchen,.grindelward, mUrren, and also visiting Harder Kulm.
What kind of pass should I buy to save on the transport on Trams, trains and cable cars etc. We are a family of 4.
UserInactive77265 postsReply 9 of 12 • 28 February 2019 at 16:42:01 #905028Hi,
that will depend on how much travelling you will be doing, but you may want to consider the following passes:
- Only Wengen and area then http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrautravelpass
- If travelling across the country to get to Wengen by rail, then you may want to look into a Swiss Travel Pass for a stay up to 15 days: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass
If you want to be methodical, you can use the spreadsheet tool in this section: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass
Hope that helps!
Maria.
UserInactive77265 postsReply 10 of 12 • 2 March 2019 at 7:45:34 #905029thanks Maria.
is the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen covered by the JUNGFRAU TRAVEL PASS. can’t see this in their website.
JUNGFRAU TRAVEL PASS covers the cable car ride from Lauterbrunnen to Grutshalp? and from there i change to a train ride to Winteregg which is covered by the same pass?
UserInactive77265 postsReply 11 of 12 • 2 March 2019 at 9:43:59 #905030Hi Leecsjimmy,
You can find a PDF map on Maria’s Jungfrau Travel Pass (no need to write in all caps – against forum rules in any case). Just click her link then the tab for “where it is valid” to see a PDF map.
UserInactive77265 postsReply 12 of 12 • 2 March 2019 at 10:22:32 #905031Hi Lucas –
<<“is the train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen covered”>>
And, even if it is not, it is a very cheap trip, because it is “intercity” and subsidized by the SBB or the Gemeinde, Canton or Federation. Of course, if you keep gong up beyond Wengen, it gets expensive.
