    Hello everyone!

I am currently planning a8 day trip for my parents between August 26 – Sept 2, 2018. I’m thoroughly confused about the different rail pass options and could definitely use some expert help in planning the trip. The good thing is, we’ve more or less zeroed down on Zurich (arrival on the 26th and stay for 1 night), Lucerne (2 nights) , Interlaken (1 night) , Lausanne (1 night) and Geneva (2 nights) as the places. We are opening to revising the number of nights at each place and even including more places based on advise we receive from you all.

Now as for the rail passes- is it better to get point to point tickets or a Swiss rail pass or a combination of point to point tickets and a Golden pass. Where all should we also opt for boat rides etc? We are looking at 3-4 star accommodations so what would you suggest for each of these places?

Hi NB and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Before we suggest one town over another, what are your parents interests and what do they want to see when they are here?

I also wouldn’t move around as much as you propose. I’d cut out Zurich and at least 1 night in Geneva to start. Unless their interests are in museums and shopping etc.

I see you note boat rides, but what else would they like? You can check out a few of the more popular boat cruises here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/activities/sceni ctrips/boat

As for rail passes, as they are traveling across the country, the Swiss Travel Pass probably makes the most sense: https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass

However, To know which rail pass is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂

As for hotel suggestions, we have several noted in most Swiss cities. Find the city you are looking at here: https://www.myswissalp s.com/wheretogo/towns and after clicking into the page, click the hotels tab.
