Exact paper format for Swiss passes and tickets

Short summary – read this first

Brett is gearing up for a trip to Switzerland in just a week after extensive planning. He needs advice on printing his Swiss Travel Pass and seat reservation since he can only access a slightly smaller paper size for printing. Brett hopes for good weather as he looks forward to exploring.

Key takeaways:
  • Don't worry about using 8.5 x 11 inch paper for your Swiss Travel Pass; just ensure all essential information is clearly printed.
  • Always have a PDF backup of your tickets on your phone in case of emergencies, but it's best to have a printed copy too.
  • If possible, consider getting your pass using the mobile app to ensure ease of use during your travels.

After months of planning and the invaluable Swiss Alps questions and answers we are off to Switzerland in one weeks time. Lots of plans and hopefully we will have fair weather.

my question: I was about to order my Travel pass and my seat reservation on the recommended leg to Montreux. In reading the terms it states on both A4 paper is required for printing. This is not available to us anywhere in close proximity to where we live. Only available is a bit smaller… 216mm x 279 mm. (8.5 x 11) Is this a problem??? Thanks

    Hello Brett,

Nice to hear you found helpful support here on the forum and are now ready to take off on your trip!!

Don’t worry about the minor difference in paper size between your standard and the European one, it’s minor. What they mean is that you can’t print it out in a much smaller format, as the code might become illegible or so.

As long as the whole code and name, etc. is printed on your page, you’ll be fine.

It’s always recommendable to also have the PDF file on a mobile device as a backup – you can never lose your card/ticket that way.

8.5 by 11 inch is fine, that’s what I use. Be sure to print an extra copy, I once lost mine on a boat, but I had 2 extra copies, so there was no problem. As for a pdf copy on my cellphone, I do have one but I once read that this might not be accepted. (If you buy your pass using the mobile app then just using the electronic version on the phone is accepted). But as has been mentioned here, if the device has died, you have a problem. It’s best to gat the pass via print-at-home.
