Hi, Just wanted to find out whether we need to make reservations on regional trains from Lake Como to Lucerne. Planning to mimic the route of the Gotthard Panorama Express. Any advice on how to best achieve this would be welcome. Our trip is in two weeks. Thank you.

    Hello Norry,

You don’t need reservations for regular trains within Switzerland.

Use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel, find fares* and buy tickets if required. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. *SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, mobile app allows you to nominate full or half-fare and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass) if that offers the best fare.

For the Gotthard Panorama Express route you want Como S. Giovanni to Flüelen (if you want to catch the paddle steamer) or Luzern (if you want to go by train all the way) via Göschenen.

You will need an Italian ticket from Como to Chiasso. See http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/italy.

They are local – comparitively spartan modern trains like city commuter trains – you can’t reserve on them, so just turn up and get the next available train.

Thank you so much, both Rockoyster and 1960man. It’s a relief to know that I don’t need to go make another reservation!
