While searching for lodging in Wengen and Zermatt for the first week of October, I’ve discovered that some hotels close in October. I’ve also noticed that some reviews of accommodations for stays in May in Wengen indicated that very few restaurants were open. Does anyone know if many restaurants are closed in Wengen and Zermatt for the first week of October?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Kfordco,

Yes, several restaurants and hotels will close for about 6-8 weeks until the ski season starts up. This is mostly in Wengen, not Zermatt. Zermatt may have a few as well but the town is larger and it will probably be less noticeable.

Early October should still be fine though – but when will you be there?

We were there in late November, 2017 and several hotels and restaurants were closed. Quite a few stores were also shut for renovations until mid December, so if you are thinking about shopping at any particular stores, I would also check out when they close for the season too.

In advance, we emailed each restaurant and verified hours, menus etc. We had 2 vegetarians in our group and had to make certain that they would be able to eat without a lot of issues. We avoid a lot of problems by doing this before we go–there’s nothing worse than thinking a restaurant is open, only to find that it is closed on certain days of the week or shut for the season.
