    Hi there,

I’m trying to sort out a multi-leg trip via the SBB site for journeys that involve both trains and buses. Do I have to break up each leg between buses and trains? I can’t seem to do it all in one, even using the advanced search.

For example, at the suggestion of another traveller, I’m looking for Zermatt to Brig by train. Then Postbus to Locarno via the Simplon Pass to Domodossola, switching back to a train on the Centrovalli railway to Locarno.

And another one: Locarno to Lugano via Bellinzona by train. Then Lugano to Pontresina on the bus via Chiavenna, Majola Pass and St. Moritz.

    Many thanks for any suggestions.

    >> Zermatt to Brig by train. Then Postbus to Locarno via the Simplon Pass to Domodossola, switching back to a train on the Centrovalli railway to Locarno.

Use the following in your timetable search:

    • From Zermatt
    • To Locarno FART
    • Via Simplon Dorf, Post

If you choose a connection involving the Glacier Express between Zermatt and Brig, a reservation is compulsory, but you can avoid that by choose connections using regional trains (with one extra change of train at Visp). You should see Bus 631 as one of your connections (the bus over the Simplon Pass).

    >> Locarno to Lugano via Bellinzona by train. Then Lugano to Pontresina on the bus via Chiavenna, Majola Pass and St. Moritz.

    • From Locarno
    • To Pontresina
    • Via Chiavenna
    • Via St Moritz

You should see Bus 631 (the Palm Express) as your connection between Lugano and St Moritz. There is only one departure per day, and reservations are compulsory (and free).

You don’t need to go all the way to Bellinzona to change for Lugano – change at Giubiasco as suggested by the timetable.

    Another good resource is the “personal timetable” option on the SBB site;

You can prepare a personal timetable for your journey and it will offer various options. You can download as a .pdf file for further reference.

It’s a great little resource and may even offer options you hadn’t thought of!

Planning is always half the fun and PPPPP always applies; prior planning prevents poor performance.

    Enjoy your travels!

In the advanced search on the SBB online timetable, if you choose a via, there is an option to choose travel mode on each separate leg, so for example you can ‘demand’ bus only on section 1 of your journey but demand train only on leg 2
