My sister and I are traveling to Switzerland from July 24th to August 1st. We are flying into Zurich, and are interested in doing some rail travel in the short time we have. One of our goals is to see the Alps. Because of the length of our trip, I am curious if it is a good idea for us to purchase the Half Price Rail Pass? We are traveling on a budget. Thank you for your help!

Hi Akfische and welcome to MySwissAlps!

For a week long trip, I am pretty sure a rail pass of some sort will be beneficial for you. However, it depends on if you travel everyday and where you travel to.

To know which pass (if any) is the best for your specific itinerary you need to plan out all trips you will make (train, bus, boat, cable car) and compare the prices for regular tickets to the rail pass price (and which routes/mountains are free or discounted). Once you have that information you can read our page here on how to choose the best rail pass. There is a spreadsheet there to help with the math. 🙂

Switzerland can be a rather expensive place to visit so perhaps something to keep in mind if “travelling on a budget”.
