Snowshoe walking on the col-du-grand-saint-bernard

    Famous as a route for travellers for over 3000 years in winter the col is cut-off for 5 or 6 months by snow. It’s only reachable on skis or snowshoes but the hospice on the col provides shelter for travellers as it has for hundreds of years. This is my favourite winter trip, I go up with clients several times each winter to spend the night in the hospice. I thought people might like the photo’s!

    Back down in the valley I often call in to see the Saint Bernard dogs who used to live all year around in the hospice:

    obviously this is a high alpine environment and requires considerable skill in evaluating snowpacks and avalanche risk so it’s worth using a guide
