Two nights Stein am Rhein or Appenzell?

We are spending three weeks driving through Switzerland in June. We'll be staying in Lucerne then to Lauterbrunnen, then to Escholzmatt then to Zurich and fly home.

We have two nights left to plan on our way from Stuttgart to Lucerne. We're considering Stein am Rhein since its right on the way or Appenzell with a visit to the Appenzell schaukaeserei.

We're traveling with a 2 year old and infant. Would love any recommendations between the two towns. Thanks!

Sorry, I can't comment as I didn't visit either. I know that both towns are very small and picturesque. I'd probably pick Appenzell for a visit to the Säntis.

As Arno mentioned, both towns are very small and very picturesque. I've been to both and enjoyed them very much.

Stein am Rhein has a well-preserved medieval town centre, which is a delight to walk through. However, if you have been travelling through Germany on your way to Switzerland, and have seen medieval town centres there, you might prefer to see the lovely frescoes of Appenzell - they are very different from most frescoes that I have seen in other places. The Appenzeller cheese is also very famous, so your idea of visiting the Appenzeller Schaukäserei is a good one.
