–plan to spend 3.5 days in lauterbrunnen, is it a good idea to visit zermatt on one of the days –considering it takes 4hrs for the toal journey OR

We were there the first two weeks in September last year. It was the perfect time to go, weather was nice, fewer tourists.

There is too much to see in Lauterbrunnen area, so I would not take the long ride to Zermatt. (besides, Zermatt deserves its own visit of at least a couple days. ) Spend some time in Murren at 6000ft. Altitude. (we spent 5 days there). Lots of restaurant terraces to sit at while enjoying the stunning views of mountains and valley from this mountain village. It is carless and so peaceful! There are lovely walks down to Gimmelwald for lunch at the Pension, or walk from Murren down to Grutsalp. Take cable car up to Shilthorn, possibly for breakfast.
From Lauterbrunnen you can go anywhere including boat ride on Lake Thun or Brienz or day trip to Jungfraujoch if weather permits. Or simply visit the many waterfalls in the valley. It all depends on your interests.
