Last year, I used a Swiss Pass to travel on the Mont Blanc Express to Chamonix, ending on the Chamonix-Mont Blanc stop (the end point of Swiss Pass validity according to the SBB map online).

This year, we are staying in Les Houches rather than Chamonix but will have Swiss Passes as we will be touring primarily in Switzerland. Will a Swiss Pass cover the few TER stops beyond Chamonix into Les Houches, or do we need to book separate SNCF tickets for that short journey?

If so– it doesn’t look like a change of trains is necessary between Chamonix and Les Houches, so do we need to get off, buy a ticket, and get back on at the Chamonix-Mont Blanc stop? Or can we simply buy tickets online and stay on the same route?

We’d appreciate any expert guidance one of you might be able to offer on these nitpick particulars 🙂 Thanks, and we are excited to visit soon!

    Hi, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

No, your Swiss Travel Pass won’t cover you beyond Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. If you have your tickets for the rest of the way before you board, you wouldn’t have to change trains. Just show your Swiss Travel Pass on the sector up until Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, then show your other tickets once you have passed that station.

This might also be relevant to you, although probably not for your day of arrival. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to enquire:

If you are staying in the Chamonix Valley, a journey on the Mont Blanc Express is free with a “Carte d’Hote”. Ask your host for this “Guest Card”. This card will give you access to the whole of the Chamonix Valley public transport network between Servoz and Vallorcine for free.

Good to know! It seems easy enough to buy a ticket ahead of time so we don’t have to worry about it mid-journey. Thanks for confirming my suspicions about this particular journey 🙂
