Hi all , It’s Helen who’s gonna study in Lucerne for around 3 years . This is my first time coming to Switzerland and I think I don’t have enough information about Swiss . First thing I am super confusing at is about those different kinds of transportation cards. As for National resident , which will be the best suitable pass for me , Swiss Pass or HFC or GA card ? OR do I need to buy all three cards ? Secondly I want to know about the SIM card . Which tele com provider is currently the best & affordable price ? Thirdly , is there any unknown info do I need to know about Switzerland .

Hello Helen and Welcome to MySwissAlps and to Switzerland,

I would say most people would use the Half Fare Card. The SBB timetable gives you half-fare prices by default because it expects that’s what Swiss residents will have in the main. The Swiss Pass is more like a “membership” than an actual pass.

For the best value SIM I’d look at Salt and Sunrise.

Thirdly , is there any unknown info do I need to know about Switzerland .”

Probably heaps but as I live in Australia I’m not sure I’m best qualified to start on that one. 😎

Hi Hellen! Great that you get to spend 3 years in Lucerne! I think you’ll love it. Rockoyster is right about the Half Fare Travelcard being the most obvious choice, but it all depends on the trips you plan to make.

As for SIM cards: our recommendations are listed at http://www.myswissalps.com/si mcard.

If you don’t know that much about the country, you could start off by browsing this section: http://www.myswissalps.com/ab outswitzerland. Our page on Lucerne might be useful too: http://www.myswissalps.com/lu cerne.
