Hi. What would be the best rail route from Zurich to Zermatt return without doubling up. We are coming over in Early May for 2 weeks. Stopping in Lucerne, interlaken Zermatt, Grindewald and where ever else we decide on. Just a rough rail journey will do. I will find things to do along the way once I have an idea of the a good rail route if that makes sense. Thankyou for your help.

“Best” depends on what your priorities are. A good route would be Zurich – Luzern – Interlaken/Grindelwald – Zermatt via Kandersteg. Return on Glacier Express Zermatt – Chur (or St Moritz) – Zurich.

Going via Kandersteg means travelling on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train over the traditional, more than 100 year old mountain route, giving you a wonderful view along the impressive peaks and down into the Rhone Valley. The 1-hour faster route Visp direct to Spiez takes you through the fairly lengthy Lötschberg Base Tunnel with rather limited views. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ L%C3%B6tschberg_railwa y_line.

    Hi Philzy71,

Another option could be to travel one-way via Montreux to follow the Golden Pass route:http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass

Also be sure to use the Swiss railways timetable to plan out these routes and see how the timings/duration work for your plans. http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable
