I would like to do the Ticino region in a day as suggested on My Swiss Alps: http://www.myswissalps.com/on edayticino. I will be starting from Locarno and going by train to Lugano, From there go to Melide, Mont San Salvatore and then back to Locarno by train and then do Cimetta and Madonna del Sasso. Will the half fare travel pass be sufficient.

If you are staying in a hotel at Locarno you should ask them about the free Ticino Ticket. It will cover much of your transport and is offered by most hotels.
