My husband and I are spending 3 days in Tirano (September 2020) and would like to take the train to St.Mortiz roundtrip. I love taking photos of the beautiful scenery, from my understanding the window on the BMX cause a lot of glare. I read somewhere there is another train where you can open the windows. We plan on doing this as a day trip. We would like to have a nice lunch in St. Moritz with a lovely view any recommendations?

Hi DeeO and welcome to MySwissAlps!

On Bernina Express there are huge panoramic windows and you cannot open those. There are open scenic carriages attached to regular trains on the St. Moritz to Tirano line but only during summer time (July and August): http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress

Anyway, if you are traveling on a local train (not on a very touristic one) where the windows are openable, it is better if you always ask the other people before opening a window. As the trains are climatized people sometimes do not like open windows, so it is better to ask to avoid any inconveniences.

Someone recommended this restaurant in a previous post: http://www.waldhaus-am-see.ch/de-de/Restaurant

All the electric unit power cars that haul the trains on the Bernina Railway have some opening windows.

On the Bernina Railway all the trains give the same views, so you don’t have to travel on the BEX coaches
