can someone please assist me in finding out how to go about getting the train from Geneva airport to Lugano.

You can enter your departure station and destination in the timetable. It will display all possible connections. Just click the 'plus' icon at the left to see details. For Geneva Airport-Lugano, several options are available. Most of them require one change of trains, either in Zurich or in Lucerne. You could also consider the scenic Wilhelm Tell Express.
