Hi, my husband and I are travelling from Vienna to Lucerne, finishing our tour on 5th December. We are looking for accommodation in Zurich for one night and then travelling to Frankfurt on the 6th December. As we are on a tight budget, we would like to know the difference between the bus fare and train fare to Frankfurt and if possible, the difference in journey time. Is there a need to book in advance for either mode of travel. Also, for the day that we are in Zurich, what is the best way to get around on public transport. I do have a few other questions, but will wait for the response to this.

    Thanking you in advance.

Hello Carmen and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

You can probably get a cheap saver fare Zurich to Frankfurt if you book in advance at http://www.bahn.com/en/view/i ndex.shtml

Thank you for your quick response.

I have checked out the site and am still a bit confused. I keyed in the details for the trip with our ages and under ‘savings fares’ is listed 79,80 Euro, under ‘Flexpreis’ is 230,40 Euro. I’m assuming that ‘savings fare’ is the one we want but I’m unsure if this price is per person or total price.

    Sorry to be a nuisance

€79.80 is for 2 people. The Saver fares apply to a fixed departure time. Miss that train and you need a new ticket. Flexpreis means you can change train times. If you want to save money go Saver and don’t change your plans.

    Hi Carmen,

You can find schedule details (bus vs. train) on the Swiss railways timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

As for getting around Zurich – it is a very walkable city but you can buy a day pass for transit when you are there or a Zurich Card: http://www.myswissalps.com/zu rich/travel

Thanks Rockoyster, this definitely seems to be the way to go. I couldn’t believe the difference in price so had to doublecheck. I’m assuming that there is no restriction on luggage?

    Cheers, Carmen

    Hello Carmen,

If you are travelling with luggage that you will take on a plan then you will have no problem carrying it on an ICE Train.
