We are staying in Zurich and travelling to Bellagio in Lake como, italy. we would like to go through the alps on our trip there and were wondering if we could go with the Bernina railway. Would this work?

    Welcome to MySwissAlps, murfies1,

Yes, that would work. Your route would be Zurich – Chur – Tirano – Varenna-Esino by train, then the ferry to Bellagio. It can be done in a day although staying a few nights along the Bernina line would make it more enjoyable.

    Hi Murfies1 –

You certainly can use the Bernina route as described by Arno.

Between Chur and Tirano, you would probably want to follow the Bernina Express route via Pontresina and thence to Tirano. The Bernina line is sometimes (and confusingly) used to refer only to the stretch from Pontrsina to Tirano..

Total time about 7- 8 hours, depending on connection, + ferry ride.

You could also take the route over the Alps via the stunning Gotthard Pass. The route would be Zürich- Bellinzona…Chiasso….Monza…Varenna- Esino . About 4 1/2 to 5 hours.
