Traveling by train from Zurich to Bernese Oberland

Looking to fly into Zurich but mostly want to be in the Bernese Oberland Area. Should we take a train upon arrival to Spiez or Interlaken? How do we get to Bernese Oberland. Traveling with 17 yr old. Short trip.

Then from Bernese Oberland to Florence Italy....all in January.
