Villages in Ticino in Oct: bus vs rental car

Hi, my family and I intend to visit some villages in Ticino in October this year. Other than renting a car, the only alternative seems to be the Post Bus. However some Post Bus routes are infrequent and would set us back quite a bit in terms of time spent waiting and travelling. Is there perhaps another affordable option? If not, is it possible and easy to rent a car for a day from Locarno? Please advise. Thanks!

Hello Kaira428, thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

That’s correct. The Swiss public transport system is excellent, but some of the more remote villages in Ticino have infrequent bus connections. If you plan well with the aid of the timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable), that doesn’t necessarily have to be a problem. And if you have a travel pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses) that covers those buses, they’re the obvious option from a budget point of view. If you have specific routes or connections you worry about, we may be able to give detailed advice.

But I can understand that you prefer more flexibility. So yes, renting a car for one or a couple of days is possible. You’ll find our recommendations at http://www.myswissalps.com/car/carrental. I think you should count on about CHF 150-CHF 300 for a 24-hour period, depending on the type of car and the company you pick.

If you choose this option, this info on preparing for car driving in Switzerland can be useful: http://www.myswissalps.com/car.

We used our own car for a holiday in a remote chalet in Ticino. Some of the interesting /higher roads are much easier to reach by car and away from bus routes. I recommend a car
