Hello, my husband and I are travelling to Switzerland in June with our 2 year old, 4 month old and the tons of luggage that comes with travelling with kids. What small town would be best to use as a base for hiking and exploring the Jungfrau region? We’ve considered Murren, Gimmelwald, Wengen, etc. We’re looking for a place that is relaxing, has beautiful views and is relatively walkable with a stroller.

    Welcome adunham,

Gimmelwald is too small I would say. No shops or other facilities. Great views, but you’ll get those in Mürren and Wengen as well. Mürren will be fine, and the center of Wengen as well. Apart from those, Lauterbrunnen and Wilderswil are in the valley and nearly flat. Mürren and Wengen are car free. Of the two, Wengen is easier to reach: a direct train, where Mürren requires a change from cable car to train.

When you travel by car to Switserland, with tons of luggage, you can better not to Wengen, Murren or Gimmelwald. You must travel by train always. Gimmelwald is not a village, but only some houses.

You can better stay in Grindelwald, Wilderswil or Lauterbrunnen. In Grindelwald you had the best view on the mountains. From Grindelwald you can easy by train or cablecar to First, Kleine Scheidegg and Mannlichen.

Thank you very much Arno and Brahms. This is very helpful. I think we’ll target Wengen, Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen for our base while in the region.

    Hi adunham-

    When in June?”

In the first week of June, the summer season has not started in the Jungfrau region. Some services and hotels will only be starting to open up. By June 15th, the season will be in full swing..

How will you hike with your kids? What are your standards for an acceptable trail?
