Arriving Zurich from Munich on the train late afternoon April 29th . . . Quick night in Zurich on the way to Murren. We are looking for a convenient hotel for walking around in the evening then catching an early train the next morning.

Would enjoy hearing from those more knowledgeable.

    Hi Kweinheimer,

We have a list of recommended hotels in Zurich here (and they note their distance to the train station as well).

If you are looking for something nice but not too fancy try the Hotel Montana – less than 5 minutes for the train station on foot. I’ve had family stay there and thought it was pretty good.

    Thank you!

Would this be a good hotel for walking around Zurich in the evening?

Sure, you have to go through / around the train station to get to the downtown area (old town across the river). So it is quite close.

As Lucas suggested, the Niederdorf area of the Altstadt (old town) is a nice area to stroll around in the evening.

On the way there, you will cross a bridge over the River Limmat. After dark, there are beautiful views of lights reflected in the river.

The Niederdorfstrasse starts near the Central tram stop, and is a narrow pedestrian street with interesting shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.

If you are there before sunset, another idea is to take the Seilbahn Rigiblick (funicular) up to the top station, where there is a small park adjacent to the Seilbahn station, with a nice view over Zürich, the Zürichsee (Lake Zürich) and the mountains beyond. You can watch the lights of Zürich come on at dusk.

To get there from Zürich Hauptbahnhof (main station), take the #10 tram (direction Zürich Flughafen) to the tram stop called “Seilbahn Rigiblick” (6 stops, 9 minutes). The bottom station of the Seilbahn Rigiblick is at the far end of a small plaza near the tram stop. Standard Zürich public transport fares/tickets apply, and it is in the central fare zone (zone 110); free with the Swiss Travel Pass if you have one.
