Zurich - Lucerne - Crans Montana Jan 2014

Hi We are a family of 5 arriving Zurich 27/Dec 13 then driving to Crans Montana (Sion) with a stop first night in Lucerne. A couple of queries.
We would like suggestions on accomodation in Lucerne for 2 adults and 3 children 10-14 for one night.
I notice that the preferred driving route has us travel north again via Berne, Bulle etc. Is it possible to drive south from Lucerne to Sion at that time of year?

As for your driving route from Lucerne to Sion: if you don't want to travel via the north and west, you'll have to drive the A8 and cross the Brünig pass (Lucerne-Meiringen) first. It's mostly open in winter, but it's recommended to take along snow chains in case road conditions are tough. Next, drive along lake Brienz and lake Thun to Spiez; bend south towards Kandersteg there. You can get from Kandersteg to Goppenstein/Brig by car train.
