You'd best consider Meiringen if you prefer a town with restaurants, shops and good public transport services. Hasliberg is up on a plateau, so it's a bit harder to reach but more amidst nature. Innertkirchen is a small village further up the valley. It can be reached by car and by a small train from Meiringen.
Grimsel Hospiz is a remarkable place on the Grimsel reservoir lake. It's near the highest point of the Grimsel Pass, away from civilization. In winter, it can only be reached by cable car. In summer you can access the hotel by bus or by car too. This luxurious hotel is surrounded by water and mountains only. Highly recommended if you are looking for a very special accommodation! Altitude: 1950 m.
