Hi Samlam,
The first option that comes to my mind is Ballenberg near Brienz, at a 45-minute train/bus ride from Interlaken: http://www.ballenberg.ch/en/themes/handcraft/making-cheese. Ballenberg is a beautiful open-air museum with lots of information and demonstrations on traditional Swiss crafts. You’ll also see traditional Swiss farmhouses. A lovely day out with a 12-year old!
SamIamParticipant97 posts20 February 2022 at 13:21:55 #938839Thanks Anna! I also see that it is free with the Swiss Travel Pass ( am I right? ☺️) We will be staying in Iseltwald. Can we catch the boat to Lake Brienz fr Iseltwald ( I heard that there is a dock in Iseltwald? ), get off Lake Brienz , take the bus to the Ballenberg Museum? We can go back on Lake Brienz and continue with our Boat trip towards Interlake and then to Lake Thun . If this scenic route is not possible, what route can we take? Thanks again!
AnnikaModerator7124 posts20 February 2022 at 15:41:02 #938840Hi Samlam!
Yes, this is free with a Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/details).
The trip you propose is perfectly possible. You can plan it in detail with the advanced timetable at https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable. In addition, you can study the boat timetables for Lake Brienz and Lake Thun using the links at http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakebrienz/gettingthere and http://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakethun/gettingthere.
Annika (not Anna, I know our names look a lot alike :-))

example: Iseltwald (depart 09.52) – Brienz arrive 10.20
Brienz to Ballenberg Museum is bus line 151:
Brienz depart 10.36 – Ballenberg museum arrive 10.51

SamIamParticipant97 posts21 February 2022 at 3:28:55 #938843The pdf is so helpful 1960man ☺️☺️☺️. Thank you bec I have been looking for the timetable and all I could see were train and bus schedules. I saved it on my trip files. I am so tthankful for you guys!
AnnaModerator6382 posts21 February 2022 at 5:54:54 #938844Hi Samlam,
The SBB timetable displays the fastest connection. To view only boat connections, as Annika mentioned earlier, you need to switch to advance mode and deselect all other modes of transport except boats.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Anna
SamIamParticipant97 posts21 February 2022 at 13:18:37 #938845Thanks Anna! I will try this! You guys are so awesome. I have a friend who will travel to Zurich in September and she will look into myswissalps.com soon ! 🤗🤗🤗
JeremySimonsParticipant20 posts21 February 2022 at 16:12:38 #938846I am somewhat disappointed by these answers, as I had hoped to be able to find something like this in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen or Murren this summer. Or at least a cheese shop. I don’t plan on taking a 45 minute train to find it, since our three days are crowded already. I do realize that a chocolate factory in the mountains would be too much to hope for, but I imagine Swiss chocolate will be available. I love the videos that feature fresh milk and cheese being sold in vending machines in those villages!
AnnikaModerator7124 posts21 February 2022 at 16:52:31 #938847No worries JeremySimons! Swiss chocolate is readily available in nearly all shops, even the smaller ones. You can read all about it at http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/culinary/chocolate.
As for cheese, the below tips may be interesting for you:
- jungfrauregion.swiss/en/summer/see-and-do/campaigns/your-world-in-the-jungfrau-region/local-products/
- jungfrauregion.swiss/en/summer/see-and-do/tradition-culture/village-experiences/alpine-cheese-tour-schiltalp/
- grindelwald.swiss/en/summer/see-and-do/tradition-culture/village-experiences/cheese-festival-wengen/ (relevant if you’ll be visiting in September)
- the “Alpkäserei”, a small dairy/cheese shop next to the Winteregg restaurant
So no, you don’t have to travel that long. I recommended Ballenberg to Samlam as he’s based in Interlaken/Iseltwald, from which Ballenberg can easily be reached, and because it’s a very nice experience for a 12-year old (and adults ;-)).
JeremySimonsParticipant20 posts21 February 2022 at 17:11:44 #938848That is very helpful Annika! I don’t know if we would take the whole cheese tour in Murren, but it happens on the Wednesday morning we will be there and it is good to know about. Thank you very much!
