Key takeaways:
Visit Ballenberg near Brienz for a great cheesemaking demonstration and traditional Swiss crafts, perfect for families.
You can travel from Iseltwald to Lake Brienz by boat and take bus 151 to Ballenberg for a smooth trip.

Hello there! Is there any place in the Interlaken, Iseltwald, or Lauterbrunnen area that offer cheesemaking demonstrations? We have a 12 y/o that might be interested. Thank you!

Hi Samlam,
The first option that comes to my mind is Ballenberg near Brienz, at a 45-minute train/bus ride from Interlaken: http://www.ballenberg.ch/en/themes/handcraft/making-cheese. Ballenberg is a beautiful open-air museum with lots of information and demonstrations on traditional Swiss crafts. You’ll also see traditional Swiss farmhouses. A lovely day out with a 12-year old!

Thanks Anna! I also see that it is free with the Swiss Travel Pass ( am I right? ☺️) We will be staying in Iseltwald. Can we catch the boat to Lake Brienz fr Iseltwald ( I heard that there is a dock in Iseltwald? ), get off Lake Brienz , take the bus to the Ballenberg Museum? We can go back on Lake Brienz and continue with our Boat trip towards Interlake and then to Lake Thun . If this scenic route is not possible, what route can we take? Thanks again!

Hi Samlam,
The SBB timetable displays the fastest connection. To view only boat connections, as Annika mentioned earlier, you need to switch to advance mode and deselect all other modes of transport except boats.

I am somewhat disappointed by these answers, as I had hoped to be able to find something like this in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen or Murren this summer. Or at least a cheese shop. I don’t plan on taking a 45 minute train to find it, since our three days are crowded already. I do realize that a chocolate factory in the mountains would be too much to hope for, but I imagine Swiss chocolate will be available. I love the videos that feature fresh milk and cheese being sold in vending machines in those villages!
the “Alpkäserei”, a small dairy/cheese shop next to the Winteregg restaurant
So no, you don’t have to travel that long. I recommended Ballenberg to Samlam as he’s based in Interlaken/Iseltwald, from which Ballenberg can easily be reached, and because it’s a very nice experience for a 12-year old (and adults ;-)).

That is very helpful Annika! I don’t know if we would take the whole cheese tour in Murren, but it happens on the Wednesday morning we will be there and it is good to know about. Thank you very much!
