    Dear vacationers,

The new long Gotthard Tunnel will be opened on June 1, 2016. Passenger trains will cross the tunnel from December 11. It took 17 years of construction works to complete this remarkable project. Traveling from Switzerland to Italy will be more efficient than ever before. For tickets, please check myswissalps.com /traintickets/italy.

However, you’ll miss the wonderful scenery when you choose this new route. There’s good news though: the old train route via Göschenen and Airolo, part of the Wilhelm Tell Express (called Gotthard-Panorama-Express from 2017), will remain open. And there’s a hiking trail that follows the new tunnel above ground: the 100 km long Gotthard Tunnel Trail. There’s a book about the trail as well (German only). Please see http://www.gotthard-tunnel-trail.ch.

The association “Gotthard Connects” hopes that travelers will also take time to explore the extraordinary Gotthard region instead of just rushing through the new tunnel. I am confident that people will do so. Please see http://www.gotthard-connects.ch/home.html for details about the region and the association.

    Arno
