We are planning an 8 day stay in Switzerland in July 2018. We plan to train it from Munich (Germany) to Wengen (4 nights) and then on to Zermatt (4 nights) and from there to Rotterdam (Netherlands). There are a few conflicting thoughts about which type of train tickets to buy. Could anyone advise the best type of rail pass to cover the travel from Germany, thru Switzerland and then on to Netherlands. Also which pass could cover the cost of side trips to the Jungfrau or Gornergrat. We are seniors (69).

First off, no Pass will cover the full cost of trips to Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat. The 2018 validity map (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity) will show you what is covered and what is discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass. eg Jungfraujoch is discounted 25% and Gornergrat 50% with Swiss Travel Pass. They are both discounted 50% with Swiss Half-fare Card.
Which pass is best really depends on how much travelling you are going to do in the various countries. In Switzerland the savings are generally better with the Swiss product than the Eurail Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/eu railglobalpass)
To work out if a Swiss Pass suits your needs you really need to work out the costs of the trips you plan to do and compare that to the cost/savings with a Pass. I would lean to the Swiss Travel Pass if your only trips outside of Switzerland are from Munich and to Rotterdam.If that’s the case you can buy point to point tickets in and out of Switzerland here. Good deals can be found if you book far enough out.
If you are traveling around Germany, Netherlands or another country than look at the Eurail Select Pass for 3 or 4 countries as well as Rockoyster’s suggestion.
Rockoyster’s last link will help you know for sure which is the best pass for your itinerary – but you must plan out all your train, bus and cable car trips in all countries and use the spreadsheet to do the math and compare.
