Hello every one,
My wife and me are planning to travel to Switzerland with our 6 month old infant for 2 weeks in the month of August, I wanted some advice as to which places/cities to stay, we are not willing to move around alott so probably 2 or 3 cities is max.

Disclaimer : I am no Swiss expert myself, just someone who just went on her first trip to Switzerland last month and is completely in love 🙂
Having said that, I would suggest Lucerne, one mountain town in the Bernese Oberland region (Grindelwald/Wengen/Mürren/Lauterbrunnen) depending on the transport and how much you are willing to travel everyday, and possibly Montreux/Zermatt. I have never been to the Ticino region (Lugano area), but my parents spent half a day there and I regret not visiting! So add Lugano to the list 🙂
Otherwise, there are plenty of links about the different regions and cities on this website for you to explore. Read and read, and you shall have your answer 🙂

It is easier to offer advice if we understand your interests. I suspect that you will not be climbing steep mountains with technical gear… it does not come in the sizes for 6 month olds. 😉

Definitely climbing is not an option on the list : )
we basically want to visit switzerland for the scenic beauty and jus to explore and visit places so want to stay at places from where day tours can be done because packing and unpacking with 6mth infant is a difficult thing..
So we were confused as to stay in Zurich or Lucerne, as per people’s posts Lucerne sounds good more scenic.
Which other place should be considered

I’d avoid Zurich (https://www.myswissalp s.com/zurich) if you want to focus on nature and landscapes. It is best for shopping, museums, galleries etc. Lugano as noted by chandni177 is also a great place to visit. There is a lot to see and do in or near Luzern. See the link provided by Lucas. Also, the tourist information office in the main station (along side the lowest numbered track (track 3?) is extremely helpful. If your child were old enough to enjoy a playground, there is a magnificent one beside the lake at the Transport Museum ( das Verkehrshaus).
There has been considerable discussion on this forum concerning taking infants (who possibly cannot communicate their distress well) to altitudes above approximately 2000 meters. There has been a wide range of opinions on this point, some of which relate not to the issue of high altitude distress but rather to the difficulty in clearly recognizing distress if a child cannot communicate clearly. I have also consulted a physician friend for perspective. Best advice is to check with your child’s doctor.
I am not sure of the best way to check altitudes easily. For specific mountains you can do a Google search, and a Wiki report for a city or a mountain usually has altitudes. Google maps does not seem to routinely display altitudes.
Simply out of habit, I always use this excellent highly detailed map to check altitudes, which has tremendous detail, possibly even too much information for a simple altitude check:
You can see that Pilatus at 2100 meters +/- (just southwest of Luzern), is probably tolerable by that advice, whereas Mt. Titlis, due south of Luzern near Engelberg, is well over 3000 meters. The Rigi is only about 1800 meters. Zoom in and out and play with the map.
For simple travel needs, I like this map, which sadly does not display altitude:

In that map, if you zoom in as far as zoom level 32, the train lines and mountain transport become very clear.
Both have good search functions.

we just completed our 2 week long trip to Switzerland with our 22 month kid. We too had the same questions in mind before the trip and fortunately we had a good trip and miss Switzerland since then.
Heres our snapshot of the trip for your reference:
we chose only 2 cities as our base, Interlaken for the beauty of Bernese Oberland and ease for travelling for day trips to other cities or towns as it’s almost in the middle of Swiss. Other city being Zurich 1 because we had an early morning return flight and 2 some shopping , but it also has few interesting outings.
from interlaken we did Schilthorn, Jungfrau, Zermatt, Brienz rothorn, Bern, Lucerne. We did heights gradually like first we did Pilatus, then Brienz rothorn then schilthorn then Gornergrat then Jungfrau. Our child didn’t showed any discomfort although he could not speak right now. All were day trips with flexible timings.
then we changed our base to Zurich where we did rhine falls, lake Zurich cruise, uetliberg, Lindt shop in kichliberg and Zurich zoo. Besides a day kept for shopping.
We always kept flexible time as per the child’s need and had to adjust travel plans many times.
