Traveling to and from your hotel in Bern

Many of the hotels in Bern are located in the old town center, and at walking distance from the central railway station. It is easy to explore Bern on foot this way, but there are plenty of trams and buses as well to get around.

Where to stay in Bern

Near the train station, in the “Obere Altstadt”

The main rail station of Bern is located in the western part of the old town center, also called “Obere Altstadt”. Many hotels in this district can be reached on foot in less than 10 minutes. They’re located in vibrant and charming old streets.

Examples of streets in this district are the Bahnhofplatz, Neuengasse, Zeughausgasse, Markstrasse, and their side streets.

Near the Bear Park, in the “Untere Altstadt”

The eastern part of the town center is also called “Untere Altstadt”. It’s surrounded by the river Aare, and close to the Nydegg Bridge, the Bear Park, and the Rose Garden. This part of town too is historic and attractive.

Some of the main streets here are the Rathausgasse, Kramgasse, Münstergasse, and Gerechtigkeitsstrasse.

Count on 12 to 17 minutes to reach the rail station of Bern, either on foot or by bus/tram.

South of the station

A few hotels are located south of the main station, but still in, or very close to, the town center. This is where the famous Bundeshaus (the federal government building) and its park with views over the city can be found.

Examples are the eastern part of the Laupenstrasse, Hirschengraben, and the Kapellenstrasse. The train station is within walking distance.

Mid-sized alternatives to Bern

Bern is located centrally and offers quick train connections to many parts of Switzerland. If you value such a location but prefer a mid-size town, you could look into Thun.

If you focus on western Switzerland, consider basing yourself in Fribourg/Freiburg, Murten/Morat, Biel/Bienne, or Neuchâtel/Neuenburg.
