Must-knows about hotels in Interlaken

  • You’ll get a free guest card for free local public transport and discounts on attractions.
  • Usually, you’ll need more than that. Look into rail passes for the region or for the whole of Switzerland.
  • Many hotels are within walking distance from the rail stations Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost.
  • Book a hotel opposite the Höhematte Park for views of the Jungfrau.
  • Consider Ringgenberg, Bönigen, or Wilderswil if you prefer a smaller village.

The free Interlaken guest card

All hotels in Interlaken provide a free guest card when you check in. It allows free local traveling and discounts on local attractions. If you own a rail pass, you’ll get free traveling and a better discount on attractions in a much wider area.

Hotels near Interlaken’s train stations

If you plan to make day trips by train (which I recommend), it’s convenient to book a hotel at walking distance from one of the train stations.

The stations are the starting points for all attractions, including the Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn and many more. The Interlaken Ost station offers most train connections, but Interlaken West is perfect too.

A great budget option close to Interlaken Ost is the Youth Hostel (2-star). If you have a larger budget, check Hotel Jnterlaken (4-star).

Good options within a few minutes on foot from the Interlaken West rail station are Hotel Rössli (2-star), Hotel Bernerhof (3-star), and Essential by Dorint (3-star).

Hotels with plenty of parking in the suburbs

If you’ll mainly travel by car, it’s best to avoid the center of Interlaken: the Bahnhofstrasse, the Höheweg, and some of the side streets. Hotels here usually have limited or no parking space, in which case you need to park in public garages. Either way, it will be paid parking.

Hotels in less central areas of Interlaken offer more, and sometimes free, parking options. Have a look at the districts of Matten and Unterseen for example.

For the suburb of Matten, which is south of Interlaken, my top picks for drivers are the Alpina Hotel (2-star) and Hotel Hirschen (2-star).

In the suburb of Unterseen, which is north-west of central Interlaken and near the train station Interlaken West, look into Aparthotel Goldey (3-star) and the Salzano Hotel (3-star).

Hotels with mountain views of the Jungfrau

For the absolute best views, you need a hotel with a south/south-east facing room, preferably around the Höhematte. That’s an open area in the center of town along the Höheweg, offering wonderful unobstructed views of the Jungfrau and the lower mountain ranges north of it.

The best hotels located here are the Metropole Hotel (4-star, with a wonderful panoramic restaurant on the top floor) and Victoria Jungfrau (5-star).

Hotels with a view of the Aare river

The river Aare runs across Interlaken and connects Lake Brienz to Lake Thun. There are various hotels right on the river, offering a nice view from the rooms and/or the in-house restaurant. The main ones are The Aarburg (2-star), Hotel Central Continental (3-star), Hotel Bellevue (4-star), and the Grand Hotel Beau Rivage (5-star).

Central hotels in the lively Interlaken center

If you prefer all kinds of shops and restaurants in close proximity, book a hotel on the Bahnhofstrasse or Höheweg. This is the lively center of Interlaken, between the West and Ost train stations.

The sidestreets Centralstrasse, Marktgasse, and Jungfraustrasse are also part of central Interlaken. The farther you’re away from this area, the quieter it will be. My suggestions for hotels in central Interlaken are Hotel Bernerhof (3-star), Hotel Krebs (4-star) and Hotel du Nord (4-star).

Quiet locations in villages near Interlaken

If you are looking for a quiet location, consider booking a hotel in one of the nearby villages instead of Interlaken itself. You’ll only be a few minutes from town, but in a more rural environment. My favorites:

  • Bönigen is located east of Interlaken, and directly on Lake Brienz. You can reach Interlaken by bus. Hotel Seiler au Lac Hirschen (4-star) in Bönigen offers rooms with brilliant lake views.
  • Ringgenberg, north-east of Interlaken, is on Lake Brienz too. Its rail station connects you to Interlaken and to Brienz. Hotel Brienzersee (3-star) is ideally located: close to the rail station and with views over the lake.
  • I enjoyed many stays in Wilderswil: a mid-sized village south of Interlaken with all facilities you need, and excellent train connections to both Interlaken and the Jungfrau Region. See if Hotel Hirschen (3-star) or the Alpenrose Hotel (2-star) meets your demands.

Low-budget hotels and hostels

There are lots of hostels in Interlaken, geared at backpackers, students, and anyone who wishes to keep costs low. Some of the regular Interlaken hotels also offer affordable rooms, depending on availability and dates.

See my guides on Swiss budget hotels and youth hostels for all options.

Luxurious hotels

If you want to treat yourself to a luxury stay in Interlaken, you should definitely have a look at the 5-star hotels Victoria Jungfrau and Grand Hotel Beau Rivage. Both are centrally located.

Additionally, the 4-star hotels Bellevue, Interlaken, and Krebs are worth your consideration.

Winter sports hotels

Winter sports areas close to Interlaken are the Jungfrau Region and the Hasliberg region surrounding Meiringen. The Interlaken Ost train station offers easy access to these areas. So hotels within walking distance from that station are ideal.

My suggestions are the Youth Hostel (2-star) for a budget stay, and Hotel Interlaken (4-star) if you can afford more.
