The free Montreux Riviera Card

As a hotel guest in Montreux, you’ll get the free Montreux Riviera Card. It grants free traveling by public transport in and around Montreux. If you need discounts for a larger region, or even all of Switzerland, look into other rail passes.

My Montreux guide further explains how to travel in and near Montreux.

Where to stay in Montreux

Near the train station

Montreux is a small town. This means that many hotels are close to the town center and the rail station. Hotels on the “Grand Rue” are right on the boulevard and offer the best lake views.

In quieter districts

If you prefer a quieter area, consider the districts of Territet and Veytaux (close to the Chillon Castle) southeast of Montreux.

Smaller villages near Montreux

Suburbs on the train line to Rochers-de-Naye

Glion, located at the hills above the town, is an option if you want to splurge. It can be reached by funicular, and by the train to Rochers-de-Naye. The luxurious Hotel Victoria can be found here.

A bit further up on the same line, you’ll find the train stop of Haut-de-Caux, where a few other hotels are located in the beautiful hills.

Romantic towns in the vineyards

If you visit in spring or summer, you may want to be located right within the vineyards of the Lavaux area. Consider the smaller towns west of Montreux in that case: Corseaux, Chêxbres, Puidoux, Grandvaux or Lutry for example. They can all be reached by train.

Vevey just west of Montreux

Vevey is just north-west of Montreux, and directly on the lake as well. It’s not exactly smaller than Montreux, but it’s less famous and accommodation prices are a bit lower.

Vevey is a convenient location train-wise. It’s on the rail line to Lausanne/Geneva in the west, and to Montreux/Villeneuve in the south-east. In addition, the scenic regional trains across the hills of the Lavaux vineyards depart and arrive here.

Villeneuve on south-eastern Lake Geneva

Further east, on the far end of the lake, is the town of Villeneuve. You’ll find several hotels here, some directly on the lake. Villeneuve is a bit smaller and less touristy than Montreux. If you want to have easy access to the Rhone Valley and the Valais too, it’s an excellent option.
