How to travel to the Brienzer Rothorn

You first need to travel to Brienz. There you will switch to the steam train.

The trip in detail

Brienz can be reached by car, by train (20 minutes from Interlaken, 90 minutes from Lucerne) or by boat from Interlaken. From the train station, you only need to cross the street to reach the steam train station. From the boat dock, it's about 2 minutes on foot to the steam train station.

You best sit on the left when departing from Brienz to get the majority of good views, although there are good views on the right as well.

Find details for the scenic round trip via Giswil and Sörenberg here.

Dates of operation

The train from Brienz operates from 3 June to 22 October 2023. From 6 May to 2 June 2023 there are train rides from Brienz to the mid-station Planalp.

The cable car from Sörenberg to Brienzer Rothorn normally operates from early June to mid-October as well. But it's closed in the summer of 2023 due to revision work for a new cable car.
