Lucerne/Zurich best rail pass + which Grindelwald for Jungfraujoch?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named ronak_khandelwal has planned a 4-day trip to Switzerland with 3 days in Lucerne and 1 day in Zurich in February. They are seeking advice on which travel pass to purchase, wondering if the Swiss Travel Pass is the best option or if a day pass would suffice for the Zurich leg of the journey, especially for trips to Jungfraujoch and other attractions.

Key takeaways:
  • Opt for the Swiss Travel Pass for extensive travel; it covers most transport and offers discounts on cable cars.
  • Consider the Swiss Half Fare Card if you're looking to save on individual trips; it cuts costs on tickets significantly.
  • When booking for Jungfraujoch from Grindelwald, select Grindelwald Terminal for departure.
  • Check train schedules carefully to minimize time spent traveling between locations.

Hi, I have booked 3 days hotel in Lucerne & 1 day hotel in zurich in Feb and i intend to follow below itinerary:

    Day 1: Jungfraujoch

Day 2: Interlaken & Grindlewald – Paragliding and other activities

Day 3: Mt Titlis, travel to zurich, stay in zurich

Day 4: Rhine falls, Lindt of Chocolates, Old City Tour

What am confused about is which particular pass to book ? There is swiss pass but then i see there are 1 day passes as well for Jungfraujoch. Am thinking to get a swiss pass for Day 1 to Day 3 and then a day pass for Zurich. Will this be a good idea or it can be optimised more ? Also, if am planning for Jungfraujoch with swiss pass, while buying tickets on jungfaujoch website, what to select in departure dropdown ? there are 3 options for grindlewald alone there.

    Hi ronak_khandelwal,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your travel plans.

If you are staying in Lucerne and visiting the Jungfraujoch, there is not a 1 day travel pass that would take you there from Lucerne.  There is a Saver Day Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/) but this does not cover your entire trip to Jungfraujoch.  Unless you are referring to a return point-to-point ticket?

The Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/) may be worth investing in for the time you are here but it’s probably best to carry out the maths to see what makes sense. (The Swiss Travel Pass is different to the Swiss Pass.  The Swiss Pass is geared for local residents (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/tickets/residents/)).

Many members of the forum use our “How to choose a rail pass” guide.  There is a downloadable spreadsheet you can use.  Thereon, based on your daily activities, the best rail pass is displayed.  Here’s the link:

In regard to your visit to Jungfraujoch (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/), if you have the Swiss Travel Pass, you’ll be fine to choose Grindelwald Terminal as this is where the Eiger Express to Eigergletscher/Jungfraujoch departs from.  All the ‘3’ Grindelwalds are explained in the link below, scroll to “The 3 train stations of Grindelwald”.

Should you need any other activity ideas when in Zurich, feel free to take a look in our Zurich guide:

I hope the above helps, do reach out if you have further questions.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

Hi, I was checking prices for Ski Pass Jungfrau on https://top-of-travel.jungfrau.ch/en/booking/ski/2 and it appears for 2 persons, it will be CHF 158.
Then, there is something called – Connecting ticket «Jungfraujoch Top Ticket», costs for 2 person, will be CHF 126

    Total = CHF 284

Now, If i simply book Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe from Interlaken Ost for 2 persons with seat reservation(10CHF/person) with a valid swiss pass, it costs around CHF 315.6

It looks like the first option is more benefitting compared to the later one.

Want to confirm if my understanding is correct here ? Do (Ski Pass + Connecting ticket «Jungfraujoch Top Ticket») involves travel from Interlaken Ost to JungfrauJoch same as the regular ticket using Swiss Pass ? Your recommendation ?

Also, when buying tickets for Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe from Interlaken Ost, in payment method, it is taking Swiss Pass as payment method, what does that mean ? Will it mean SwissPass has some kind of balance in it ? Or it will be like once i enter details for Swiss Pass, it will take me to a payment page where I can use my debit card to pay ?

    Hi ronak_khandelwal,

If it’s not too late to change your hotel reservations in Lucerne, you may want to think about staying in Grindelwald for two nights based on your plans and head to Lucerne from there. With an early start to Lucerne, from Grindelwald, you can get to Mt Titlis the same day. Upon arrival at the Lucerne train station, you can put any luggage in a locker and head right out on the next train to Engelberg to visit Titlis.
Grindelwald is between 2.5 and 3+ hours (Each Way) each day from Lucerne. That’s 5 to 6 hours out of your day, twice. Also, I don’t believe there will be any paragliding available in February, as it will probably be too cold.
I also agree with Yolahda with investing in the Swiss Travel Pass. All your transportation on trains, buuses, and boats are free. 50% discount on most cable cars (25% discount up to the Jungfraujoch). I hope this helps you in your planning. Have a great trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

    Hi ronak_khandewal,

The Jungfraujoch Connecting Ticket is only valid in combination with a Jungfrau Ski Pass of 3 days or more. If you’re you’re planning to get a 1-day Jungfrau Ski Pass, you will not be able to purchase the connecting ticket at CHF63 per person.

Based on your plans, consider getting a Swiss Half Fare Card ((https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-half-fare-card/) for each traveller. Below is a rough cost for your train trips with the Swiss Half Fare Card:

Swiss Half Fare Card = CHF120 per person
Lucerne – Jungfraujoch roundtrip = CHF159 per person
Lucerne – Grindelwald roundtrip = CHF45.80 per person
Lucerne – Titlis roundtrip = CHF68.40 per person
Lucerne – Zurich HB one way = CHF13.50 per person

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Anna
