Rail pass for 3 days in Murren

Short summary – read this first

A traveler plans a 3-day trip from Basel to Murren, aiming to visit the Schilthorn if weather allows. They seek advice on whether a Swiss Travel Pass is beneficial for hiking and sightseeing in Murren and whether they can purchase the pass at Basel's train station.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect to use public transportation like cable cars and trains in Murren, making a rail pass likely cheaper than individual tickets.
  • It's advisable to calculate all potential trips when considering the Swiss Travel Pass, as it could save you money.
  • Purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass online in advance is a good idea; you'll have a ready-to-use pass upon arrival in Basel.

We’re traveling from Basel to Murren for 3 days. We would like to do the Schlithorn if the weather cooperates. Then traveling to Zurich for the flight out. From the calculations I’ve done, it seems like we’re close to breaking even with a Swiss Travel Pass, or half fare card.

    Question

    1. if we’re planning to do some hiking and other sightseeing around the Murren area, would we likely be using cable cars and/or trains? If so, would that make it even more advantageous to purchase a pass?

    2. Also, can we purchase a pass in the train station at Basel or does it need to be purchased in advance?

    Thank you!

Hi dlourens, thanks for joining us!

Yes, you’re very likely to be using lots of public transportation during your stay in Mürren. You’ll have to include each and every trip in your calculations, and if you’re already near break even point without having listed every trip you’ll probably be making, then a rail pass will for sure be cheaper than regular full fare tickets. If you need detailed calculations, please follow the guidelines at http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass. Apart from the passes you’ve mentioned, you may want to consider the Regional-Pass Bernese Oberland which offers excellent coverage for the region you’re visiting: http://www.myswissalps.com/re gionalpassberneseoberl and.

An online purchase is recommended, as you can order print at home passes that are ready to use as soon as you arrive in Basel. Retailers are listed at
