4-day Swiss Travel Pass vs point-to-point tickets

Short summary – read this first

Hallo is planning a 5-day trip to Switzerland with his 22-year-old son in September. He’s working on an itinerary and wants to know if getting 4-day Swiss Travel Passes is convenient since he had trouble calculating the costs for individual tickets. He’s also unsure about how to use the SBB app for ticket prices.

Key takeaways:
  • Get the Swiss Travel Pass for easy travel without needing individual tickets.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, boats, trams, and buses, making it flexible for hopping on and off.
  • Discounts are available for mountain transport like cable cars with the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • If your son is aged 16 to 25, consider the Swiss Travel Pass Youth for a cheaper option.

Hallo, I am planning 5 days with my 22 year old son in September. I thought I would just get us both 4-day Swiss Travel Passes, for convenience. But I could not figure out how to use the spreadsheet. Any chance someone can take a look below at my outline to see if I missed anything? Based on just one adult:

Day 1, land in Zurich, train to Bern. 21CHF Explore Bern maybe some transit.

Day 2, Bern to Lauterbrunnen 18CHF to Murren. 10CHF* Explore Murren and BO area. Another cable car ride? ?CHF*

Day 3 Schilthorn 85CHF* & more BO explore, hike. Maybe other cable car rides?

Day 4 Murren to Lauterbrunnen 10CHF*+ to Zermatt 40CHF to Gornergrat Cogwheel 126CHF*. Zermatt to Brig. 20CHF

Day 5 (Ignore) train Brig to Italy (Only 8CHF for Brig to Domodossola, which is much more than the increase to 6 day STP)

So if I have this summarized correctly, the cost by purchasing point to point tickets individually on SBB trains would be approximately 21(Bern)+18(Lautterbrunnen)+40(Zermatt)+20(Brig)

    =~ 99CHF

*Discounts on non SBB trains and cable cars (10+85+10+126=231) ~half off

    =~115CHF

STP 4 day is 281CHF for adult

So, if I’m doing this right, it will cost

    ~ 231+99 = 330CHF without any pass

    ~ 115+281 = 396CHF with the adult pass

    Danke!

    Welcome

I have looked at a couple of your calculations and think you have been using the half fare ticket prices. The SBB app automatically defaults to half fare price because it assumes that most travellers (residents and tourists) will have half fare card. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass you will not need a ticket. You just board the train.

The fare from Zurich airport to Bern is 56 CHf. Bern to Murren is 46.80 CHF. Full price point to point ticket bought 60 days in advance.

It would probably be easier if you just input the departure station and final destination station as if you have a point to point ticket you can break your journey and catch any train to continue to your destination. The ticket is valid all day.

    Hope this is of help.

    Jane

    Hi Nerdygjerde,

As Jane had pointed out, the SBB timetable displays tickets in half-price by default so the prices you have indicated are not the standard full-price. You can find information on how to use the timetable here: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

Based on your travel plans, a 4-day Swiss Travel Pass seems the best option. With a Swiss Travel Pass, you won’t have to worry about buying tickets for your train journeys and you can hop and hop off as many times as you wish. The Swiss Travel Pass is also valid on the boats. trams and buses. The only tickets you need to purchase are for mountain transportation such as the cable car to Schilthorn. These tickets are discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass.

If your son is between 16 and 25, he is eligible for the Swiss Travel Pass Youth which is priced slightly cheaper then the standard adult pass. You can purchase the Swiss Travel Pass online here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price

For information about travel and tickets to Italy, you can find more info here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy

Hope this clarifies. Please reach out if you need further info.

    Regards,

    Anna
