Hi. I’m landing in Frankfurt on May 27th. From 27th May to June 3rd I want to explore the Swiss-Germany-France border. My only fixed part of this plan is to be in Lucerne on 28th May which is a Sunday to visit a friend who lives there.

To give you a background I have been in Switzerland in the past and taken help from this forum to plan my trip and you guys were the best. I had then stayed in Lucerne and visited montreux, laurerbrunnen, wengen, murren, and locarno and took the glacial express train.

This time during the above mentioned dates I’m specifically needing help with the following

    1) what would be a good itinerary to explore the German-Switzerland-France border. My interests are scenic spots and easy hikes. I do not want to repeat the places I have already visited in Switzerland.

    2) which place would be a good base for the suggested itinerary. I want to stay in budget accommodations like hostels and not fancy hotels. I could always stay in Lucerne at my friend’s too if that works.

At the end of the 5 days I.e. on June 3rd or 4th I plan to take a train back to Bonn, Germany where my sister lives and visit her

Please help me with figuring out an itinerary. Usually I do a lot of research but this time, with job changes and extra work I haven’t gotten around to even looking anything up. Thank you in advance.

I heartily agree with you wanting to explore the northern border regions of Switzerland.

I recommend you concentrate on the Jura mountains – a beautiful area much under-mentioned on this forum!

You can walk in medium altitude mountains in the Jura – lots of different things to see and pleasant greenery to walk in, and you can explore the many historic towns and villages, including fortress towns (eg Romont), Roman towns (eg Avenches), spa towns (eg Yverdon) etc.

Neuchatel is a lovely city, and from various places on top of the high Jura you can get incredible views of the Alps

One place to do that is the (rather obviously named…) Vue des Alpes pass road

There is an official Vue des Alpes walking route:

I want to stay in budget accommodations like hostels and not fancy hotels.

There are quite a few youth hostels in the Swiss Jura region.

Another alternative for cheap accommodation is to stay in the cheap hotels of the Accor Hotels group, but in France or Germany – and travel across into Switzerland each day

    Hi nivrsv,

Northern Switzerland is lovely to explore! This 6-day itinerary suggestion is full of picturesque towns, lakes and green hills: http://www.myswissalps.com/plantrip/doityourself/sampleitineraries/allseasondrivingtour. It’s proposed as a car trip, but many destinations can be reached by train as well, and you can fully customize it to your own preferences and plans.
