I have a trip to Spain next month, but have some extra days that I can go to other places. My first possible destination is Switzerland and the second is Portugal. To Switzerland I thinking to take a flight in Madrid to Zurich and start from there. The other option is to take a flight in Madrid to Milan and start from there. We are 4 adults 2 couples all in the 40, the time we have is 5 days. Any recommendations what transportation will be better and the best town to visit, I will appreciate. We love the nature and all the scenic views. Thanks for this forum

    Hello hxvoop

    Welcome to MySwissAlps

You give us rather limited information.  By ‘next month’ I assume you mean March.

I would not fly to Milan.  Milan would only make sense if you were going to base yourselves in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, main towns Lugano, Bellinzona and Locarno.

Fly to Zurich and base yourselves there.  Invest in SWISS TRAVEL PASSES.  Switzerland has the world’s best public transport system.  The STP gives you unlimited free travel on that system, though mountain trips are usually  excluded.  I would stress that by ‘public transport’ I mean buses, boats and streetcars, as well as trains.

From Zurich go out on day trips.  Here are some suggestions.

St Moritz, going via Chur and Filisur, returning via Klosters and Landquart.
Locarno, going via the scenic route through Goschenen and Airolo.  Then go on to Lugano.  Come back on a fast Intercity train.  Only takes two hours going through the Gotthard base tunnel.
Geneva.  Go on the IC1 via BERN.  Come back via NEUCHATEL.  (On the return journey you will need to change at RENENS.)
Lucerne (called LUZERN in German).  Go for a boat ride on the lake.  Go up Mount Rigi from Vitznau.  Return from Rigi to Zurch via Arth-Goldau.  (The Rigi mountain trains are free with the STP.)
The Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen.  Then go on to the delightful small town of STEIN AM RHEIN.

    Best wishes
    Roger

    Hi hxvoop,

In addition to Roger’s helpful reply.

I agree, the best way to travel around Switzerland would be by using the public transport here.  It’s practical and very convenient. You can read about the Swiss public transport in the link below:

Investing in a rail pass like the Swiss Travel Pass would be a good idea too. It covers all of Switzerland. There are other passes available but this would depend on your overall plans.

In the meantime, more on the Swiss Travel Pass here:

Other itinerary suggestions can be found in our planning section.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
