Swiss rental car with Canadian license

Short summary – read this first

Aman is visiting Switzerland in August and plans to buy a Swiss Travel Pass for eight days. He has questions about driving with a Canadian license and choosing between Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn for the best views, as he’s not planning to hike.

Key takeaways:
  • You can rent a car with your Canadian driver's license and an international permit; just be cautious with speed limits as fines are steep.
  • For the best views of the Matterhorn, choose Gornergrat, as it provides the iconic postcard view that many are familiar with.

    HI, Swiss team

Actually i am coming here in August. I am planning to buy swiss travel pass for eight days. For one day i looking for rental car in Gstaad due to shortage of time. I have two questions i am coming from Canada.

First can i drive with Canadian license with international permit and rules and regulations same like North America .

Second question is in Zermatt if i have to choose between Gornegrat and klein matterhorn whichone i should choose and which i can skip? Which is for better views? I am not doing hiking or any other things.

    Thanks,

    Aman

Yes, you’ll have no problem renting with your CDN driver’s license. Regulations are very similar here – don’t speed as the fines are huge and they will ticket for for 1 or 2km/h over the limit. Maximum speed is really the maximum speed here. 🙂

Both mountains, Klein Matterhorn and Gornergrat offer great views of the Matterhorn in good weather.

Gornergrat gives you the postcard view everyone knows of.
