Access to 7 viewing platforms of the Rhine Gorge (Ruinaulta)

Short summary – read this first

Subrata and his wife are planning a trip to the Ruinaulta Region on March 22. They want to visit the seven observation decks while minimizing walking due to health constraints. They are looking for advice on how to reach these decks using trains and buses.

Key takeaways:
  • Research the accessibility of each observation deck, as some require more walking than others.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass can be useful for unlimited travel on the Swiss public transport system.
  • Only Il Spir is open year-round; most decks are accessible from May to October.
  • Check local bus schedules carefully since services may not operate after early March.

My wife and I have planned a trip to the Ruinaulta Region on the 22nd March this year. We would like to visit as many of the seven observation decks in this Region as possible. Our only constraint is that we cannot walk long distances given our age and general state of health. We will be based in Rhazuns for a few days. I am looking forward to suggestions on how best to reach these decks (or at least some of them) by a combination of train & bus so as to reduce our walking distance as much as possible.

    Hi Subrata,

Most of the observation decks will require a degree of walking.  For example Crap Signina requires a 30 minute walk from Laax village.  Il Spir is around a 5 minute walk from the bus stop Flims Dorf, Conn. This is probably the shortest walk of the 7 observation decks.

You may want to research individually the observation decks and see what is feasible for you both from the respective bus or train stops. Use the Swiss timetable: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

    Hello Subrata and Yolanda.

I have been trying to cast my mind back to a time, about 30 years ago,  when I caught a bus (now numbered 401) from Versam-Safien station up to Versam village.   I seem to recall that there were brief views from the bus over the canyon.

Looking (on line) at the official Swiss government map, I see that there is a bus stop called ‘Versam, Islabord’ (altitude 829 metres) about 1.5kms from the station (altitude 635 metres) and about 1.5 kms before the bus reaches Versam village(altitude about 900 metres).

The Ruinaulta website says this.‘The “Islabord” viewing platform is just a short distance from Versam village. The balcony offers a superb view of the sheer rock walls and the UNESCO World Heritage. Islabord can be reached via hiking trail 656.9, with a direct connection to public transport.’

Does anybody know how far it is from the bus stop to the viewing platform?

(Note that the small open top bus which features on the Ruinaulta website only runs in summer.)
(There appears to be a limited bus service from Flims Dorf, Post to Flims Dorf, Conn, but that apparently only runs until March 8th!  The Swiss electronic timetable is showing buses up until that date, but nothing after that date.)

    Kind regards

    Roger

    Hi Subrata,

Please note that most of the observation platforms around the Rhine Gorge are only accessible from May to October. The only viewing decks that is open all year round is II Spir, which can be reached from the Flims Waldhaus on foot via a hiking trail.

    Regards,
    Anna
