Hi

I am finding the information on your website invaluable. My husband and I are travelling to Switzerland via Geneva Airport in June. I have used the Travel Pass Spreadsheet and decided to buy the 8 day Swiss Travel Pass before we go and the 4 day Jungfrau Travel Pass when we get to Wengen. We like travelling around on the Swiss transport system and drinking coffee/wine/beer in mountain restaurants and taking in the views rather than walking these days.

Our itinerary is as follows:

Wednesday, 12th June – arrive in the evening at Geneva Airport and stay overnight in hotel

Thursday, 13th to Monday, 17th June – Hotel Silberhorn, Wengen.

We have stayed in Wengen a number of times over the years and are going to plan each day depending on the weather, but hope to go up the Schilthorn, visit Mary’s café where the Lauberhorn Run ends and perhaps go up to Jungfraujoch, to Grindelwald or take a boat trip on one of the lakes.

Monday, 17th June to Wednesday 19th June – Hotel Des Alpes, Lucerne.

We are planning to arrive in Lucerne at lunch time on Monday, 17th June and are leaving on the Wednesday lunchtime which means we have one whole day and two half days in Lucerne. If we have good weather on the Tuesday (whole day) we would like to visit two mountains and I am thinking of choosing Mount Stanserhorn and Mount Titlis as I think, having looked at the train timetable, that they are close to each other. Do you think this is the best use of our time on that day? We may visit Mount Rigi or Mount Pilatus on one of the half days.

Wednesday 19th June – travel to Geneva in the afternoon, stay in hotel near airport.

Thursday, 20th June – fly back to UK in the morning.

I’m not sure that a Jungfrau Travel Pass is required on top of a Swiss Travel Pass.

If you haven’t already done so you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math.

First thanks a lot for the appreciation of MySwissAlps.com. It’s nice to hear that the information is useful for the users.

As rockoyster says, there is probably no need for both of the train passes, use his link for calculations.

Now to your trip.
As you say, visiting Stanserhorn and Titlis on one day makes most sense, as Stans (from where you go up Mount Stanserhorn) is on the way from Lucerne to Engelberg (from where you go up Mount Titlis).

Regarding the other half day available, both Mount Rigi or Mount Pilatus are possible, whereas I personally would go for Mount Pilatus, as in June the Golden Round Trip is available and it is most spectacular.

Thank you Rockoyster and Steph,

I did check the fares on the spreadsheet before I posted, but we have looked at our trip in the Jungfrau region in a bit more detail this morning and completed the spreadsheet again. We are planning the following, but will make a decision as to whether to buy the three day pass when we arrive. If the weather is likely to be dodgy we probably will not buy it and pay half price as we go.

Day 1 13th June – take the train to Eigergletscher when we get to Wengen at lunchtime.

Day 2 14th June – take the cable cars to Grindelwald from Wengen via the Mannlichen, gondola to First and maybe the bus to Gross Scheidegg and then train back from Grindelwald to Wengen via Kleine Scheidegg.

Day 3 15th June – take the cable car to the Mannlichen and back before travelling to the Schilthorn via Murren for lunch and then take the cable car to Stechelberg and bus back to Lauterbrunnen and train back to Wengen.

As the trip up to the Schilthorn is included in the Swiss Travel Pass do I have to get tickets from the train station in Wengen or do we have to just show our STP at each train/cable car station?

Day 4 16th June – take boat trip on Lake Thun (covered by Swiss Travel Pass). May visit castle.

Thank you, Steph for your confirmation that we can visit Mount Stanserhorn and Mount Titlis on the same day and suggesting that we visit Mount Pilatus over Rigi. I have looked at the information you advised me to look at on The Golden Round Trip.

Hi Jane

It appears you will be using the Jungfrau travel system fairly extensively. Besides cost, the convenience of a Jungfrau Pass is a consideration. You just show the pass and get on the bus/train/cable car. When we last did a trip to Wengen plus another town as base we found the Swiss half fare card plus the Jungfrau pass to be significantly less than the STP and slightly less than the Swiss travel pass flex plus Jungfrau pass. Hi Jane,

You only need to show your Swiss Travel Pass when requested. That’s on the train if the staff wants to check your pass, or in case of the Schilthorn at the ticket desk to get you free tickets to pass the turnstiles.

Hello Jane,

I can’t find the detail but have at the back of my mind that the Männlichen – Grindelwald cableway is not running in June owing to construction and upgrade work related to the V-line Project. I may be wrong. Someone will no doubt chime in with the details.

Hello Rockoyster

According the website the cableway is closing on the 22nd June and there is a bus service to Grindelwald from that date. We will have to go back again in a year or two to use the new system. We are there from the 13th to 17th which is lucky as I didn’t know about the project before I booked the flights and hotels. My husband is hoping to see the building works from the cable car. If it is closed we will use the train to get to Grindelwald.

This does not worry us.

Sorry about the false alarm. I just found “PLEASE NOTE the Grindelwald route will be closed in spring 2019, and replaced with the brand new cable car, opening December 2019. The new journey will take 19 minutes and feature modern, 10 person cabins. Between 22 June and 13 October 2019 there will be a replacement bus from Grindelwald Grund to the Männlichen, departing 7 times per day.”

How did you find out about that bus? Is it on the Jungfrau Railways website? So far I haven’t found replacement transportation.

Hi Arno,

I actually found it at http://www.swissholidayco.com /Regions/Bernese-Oberland/Excursions/Ma nnlichen whereas it is more easily found at http://www.maennlichen.ch/en/ summer.html as Jeni notes.

The winter timetable only runs to 31Mar then the Summer timetable commences 22 June with the bus replacement service according to http://www.maennlichen.ch/en/ summer/information/tim etable.html. Does that mean the only way to get from Grindelwald to Wengen between those dates is the long way round by train? There is no way to get from Männlichen to Grindelwald in the interim?

Hi Arno and Rockoyster,

Having read through the links I think that the cable car to Grindelwald from the Mannlichen is closed for the summer and so not running whilst we are there (13th to 17th June). I am assuming that the replacement bus service does not start until the season is busier.

It gives me a good excuse to go again in the summer in a year or two and my husband is even talking about going skiing next winter to try out the new cableway.
