Age restrictions Swiss Travel Pass Flex Youth 2022

Short summary – read this first

Dratek is planning a three-week trip to Switzerland in July and wants to buy an 8-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex. He is unsure if he should buy the 2021 pass with a youth discount due to age rules changing in 2022, especially since he'll be 25 when he travels.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase your pass based on your age at the time of travel, not at the time of purchase.
  • If you're buying now, the 2021 rules may still apply, allowing you to get a discounted youth pass if you're 25 by travel time.
  • Consider the Swiss Travel Pass now to take advantage of promotions, even if it means paying the adult fare for better peace of mind.

    Hello,

I planning my trip to Switzerland in July 2022, about 3 weeks long, so I will buy 8-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex. For my question I must add that I am now 24 years old and in May 2022 I will be 25.

There will be new types of passes from next year, but I will want the 8-day pass. I want to use the discount for young people (if possible). It will be possible to use this year’s pass (with a price for 2021), for which there is now a 25% discount and which is valid for young people <26 years (inclusive), or I have to buy a pass for 2022, but for adults, because there is a new upper age borders for young people <25 years (24.99 years)?

Maybe my question is a bit rough, but I understand that passes take effect on the day of departure, ie my 25th birthday, and not on the date of purchase? if so, can I still buy a pass with a 25% discount now and without fear of using it next July because there is still a 26 year condition for young people? Therefore, I ask to know which pass I should buy correctly, so that I do not have problems with the validity of the pass.

I want to visit Zurrich, Luzern, Interlaken, Montreux, Zermatt and St.Moritz. When I will be staying few nights in hostels or so, I want to use my spare travel days for sale on mountain excursions.

Thank you very much for your answer,

    Dratek

    Hi Dratek,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

When selecting the correct railpass, you should consider your age at the time of travelling and not when you purchase it. You can find more information about the Swiss Travel Pass Flex 25% discount promotion here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex/promotions

    Hi Dratek!

In 2022, the Swiss Travel Pass (Flex) Youth is only for those who are 24 years old or younger at the start date of the pass. The changes are explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/changes-to-the-swiss-travel-system-passes-in-2022. But if you buy now, the 2021 rules should still apply and you should be able to buy a (discounted) pass based on the fact that you’re 25 when traveling.

We’ll ask for confirmation to make sure, and we’ll get back to you in this thread once we know more.

    Thanks Anna and Annika!

I will wait for now before buying the correct Swiss Travel Pass Flex until your confirmation.

    Hi Dratek,

I checked on https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/#/en/home and found that it automatically checks your age. If you buy a pass for 2021, it allows travelers up to 25 years old. If you buy for 2022, it only allows people up to 24. You can try yourself and select a Youth pass, and fill out your birth date in the next step. It should not allow your birth date, so that means you will have to opt for an adult pass.

    I hope this clarifies things!

    Hello Arno,

Thanks for further informations. When I am trying to buy pass from HappyRail (via http://www.happyrail.com/en/pass/europe/switzerland/swiss-travel-pass-flex) it allows me to buy Youth pass which is up to 25 years old (I can’t see if it’s included or not – and thats the problem I guess). And I can confirm it won’t allow me to buy Youth pass from SBB travel centre (via shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/#/en/product/swissFlexiPassPromo), otherwise I must buy adult ticket, where is actually 54 € price difference compared to pass from HappyRail.

On the other hand, I can still go for Interrail pass for Switzerland, which can be cheaper, but with less extra benefits, like free urban transport on travel days or so.

    Regards,

    Dratek

    Hi Dratek,

You may indeed be able to buy a discounted Swiss Travel Pass Flex Youth via HappyRail, but this can be risky if you have to show your pass and passport/ID to the train conductor when asked for, as the 2022 rule states that 24 is the maximum age for a Swiss Travel Pass (Flex) Youth.

If I were you I’d take advantage of the current 25% promotion on the Swiss Travel Pass (Flex): http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/swiss-travel-pass-25-off-until-11-december-2021. Even though you’ll have to pay the regular adult fare, this is still a very good deal.

The Interrail Pass indeed is a bit less flexible and doesn’t provide the same coverage as the Swiss Travel Pass (Flex): http://www.myswissalps.com/interrailswitzerlandpass.

If you want to make sure which pass is best for your plans, you’d best make calculations as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.
