Children + reservations for the Allegra coach on the Bernina Express?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler with a family of six is planning to take the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano. They want to know if they need to reserve seats in the Allegra units, what time to arrive at the station for first-come, first-served seats, and if their children can sit in those units. They have an overnight stay in Chur and hold Swiss Travel Passes.

Key takeaways:
  • No seat reservations are required for Allegra units, and children are allowed to sit in them.
  • Arrive at Chur station by 08:00 for the 08:17 train to secure first-come, first-served seats.
  • Don’t forget to apply for the complimentary Swiss Family Card that allows your children to travel for free with you.

    Hi,

My family of 6 (include 2 children age 12, 13) plan to take Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano. I’ve heard that there are Allegra units hauling the Bernina Express.

We stayed in Chur overnight and have Swiss Travel Pass.

Do we need to reserve seat in Allegra units?

If not, what time should we present at the train station to be able to get “first come first serve” seats in Allegra units?

Are children allowed to sit in Allegra units?

    Thanks

    Hello again

No reservations are needed if you are travelling in the Allegra unit.  And there is no supplement payable for using the Allegra unit.  The sections of the unit at the extreme ends are First class.  The central  sections are Second class.  There are in total 24 first class seats and 76 second class.  All passengers, including children, can use the Allegra unit.  (In the middle of the unit there is a multifunctional area for wheelchairs PRAMS, bikes etc.)  Sit on the right for the best views.

The train leaves Chur at 08 17 from platform 13.  It goes out westwards.  Be at platform 13 by about 08 00, and wait at the western end, about 25 metres east of the escalators going up to the postbus station.

    Best wishes for your trip!

    Roger

    Hi anhdao,

Very well explained by Roger and yes, first come, first served for seats in the Allegra coaches so if you are OK to arrive earlier to queue. It’s additional option to enjoy the Bernina Express route.

More information in the link below. Scroll to “Normal trains versus Bernina Express trains”:

In case you have not done so already, as you will have the Swiss Travel Pass, do apply for the complimentary Swiss Family Card so your 12 and 13 year olds can travel for free with you.

    Have fun.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
