Is Anzère a good base town to stay, coming from Germany?
A traveler shared their journey from a small village in Germany to Anzère, Switzerland, and is seeking advice on transportation and accommodation. They mentioned planning two trips (SDP1 and SDP2) to explore the area and return home, while also expressing concerns about travel times and transportation options, especially about the Swiss Travel Pass validity for local buses in Anzère.
- The Swiss Travel Pass covers all local bus routes in Switzerland, including the bus services in Anzère.
- It's advisable to take the morning bus to Zurich to ensure timely connections, as later buses can be delayed.
- Anzere is primarily a ski resort but offers attractions even in summer; plan accordingly for nearby day trips through buses from Sion.
- Ensure to familiarize yourself with the bus stops and train schedules, especially for the connections back to Germany.

Greetings Roger and Yolanda,
We had started the first leg of journey already, and had been extremely tired and without Internet occasionally. I now have the moment to write. It seems now that there is a place possible in Anzere. It seems that BE route may not be possible but perhaps part of GE is. Please let me know if it is a good place to stay. We can come on SDP from Germany where the accommodation was in a small village on the other side of the Constance. I figured out that there is a bus connection to Zurich. It cost almost the same as the route to get to Constance station. The downside is that it will take almost 2 1/2 hours to get to Zurich.
From Zurich, could there be workaround to utilze SDP 1 such that it covers the part of GE but ends in Anzere? from map, it seems that Viisp is closer to Anzere, therefore, I am assuming that it might be possible but I am not sure if we would miss some circular trip.
The second SDP (SDP 2) could also be started from the same place in Anzere but I’m not sure what could be the best route to utilise that SDP. The second SDP would be used from Anzére to some route that you might suggest but we have to end up that day again to the German village near Constance.
In short, it seems that we visit Anzére from German village on SDP1 and come back to the German village from Anzére on SDP 2 (there is few days gap between those 2 SDPs).
I think that’s the only accommodation that we could manage now in Switzerland.
I also heard that only bus moves in Anzére. I hope that it is covered in SDP and that there is no need to pay any extra tickets, hopefully.
Please comment on this place. It seems that it is a ski resort.

What is the exact date on which you will be travelling to Anzere?
What is the exact date of your second SDP (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/) which you will be using to return to Germany?
I figured out that there is a bus connection to Zurich. What time does this bus get to Zurich? Where does it terminate in Zurich?
Anzere. This village is primarily a ski resort, but no doubt at least some of the accommodation is open in summer. There is an approximately hourly bus service from SION. SDP is valid on this route. Indeed SDPs are valid on all LOCAL Swiss bus routes, but not on the long distance bus from Germany to Zurich.

The only reasonable bus is in the morning arriving 9:30 in Zürich at Ausstellungsstrasse 5, 8005 Züric. however, the subsequent buses are then late in the afternoon and evening. Therefore, it is important that early morning bus should be taken In order to get to Zurich in time at 9:30. However, please note that sometimes the bus can also be late.
SDP 1 starting 23 June, SDP 2 28 June returning to Germany.
Reply 3 of 27 • 6 June 2025 at 19:19:01 #2654849Hi Pearl,
Anzere is a long way from Konstanz, almost 6 hours if you’re using public transport. For exploring the Valais region (https://www.myswissalps.com/region/valais/), Anzere would be a good base but you will be relying on buses mostly if you are planning day trips to other destinations. The nearest railway station would be Sion (about 40 mins by bus). From Sion, you could easily plan day trips by train to Montreux (46 mins,) and Brig (45 mins to 1 h).
Montreux: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/montreux/
Brig: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/brig/I hope this helps.

(I wrote my reply before I had seen Anna’s reply.
She says that Anzere is a long way from Konstanz, almost 6 hours if you’re using public transport. She is assuming that you will take the direct route via Zurich, Bern and Visp. The two two routes I am suggesting are not ‘direct’!)Thanks for the information in this latest reply.
I have managed to work out a scenic route from Schiggendorf to Anzère on Monday 23rd and a very scenic route for the return journey on Saturday 28th. The return route includes some of the railway lines followed by the Glacier Express.
These times do not involve using the bus from the Konstanz area to Zurich Ausstellungsstrasse. It uses the local German buses which I explained in Reply 22 in the more recent of your previous threads.
Make sure that you know the location of the relevant bus stops in both Meersburg and Konstanz.
The German bus information is taken from http://www.bwegt.de. The Swiss information is taken from http://www.sbb.ch You need to make yourself familiar with both these sites.
Monday June 23rd Schiggendorf to Anzère via Konstanz, Zurich, Luzern, Interlaken, Spiez, KANDERSTEG, Brig and Sion.
Catch the 7382 bus at 07 55 from Schiggendorf to Meersburg Kirche, arrive 08 08.
08 24 route 700 bus from Meersburg Kirche (Church) to Konstanz, arrive Konstanz Bűrgerbűro at 09 05.
Walk the 590 Metres to Konstanz station.
From Konstanz catch the 10 09 IR75 bound for Luzern via Zurich. (Luzern is the German name for the city called Lucerne in English.).
Sit on the right hand side when leaving Konstanz. That means that when the train changes direction at Zurich Hauptbahnhof you will now be on the left hand-side. This is the best side for views! Train reaches Luzern at 12 25.
Catch the 13 06 Luzern-Interlaken Express. Arriving Interlaken Ost at 14 54. Sit on the right hand side of the train for the best views. When this train changes directions at Meiringen, do not change your seat. You will now be on the left-hand side, the best side for views over Lake Brienz.
At Interlaken Ost go straight across the platform from platform 4 to platform 5 and get on the 14 59 the German ICE train bound for Hamburg(!) . Your saver day pass will be valid on this train for rides within Switzerland.
Sit on the right-hand side of the train for the best views. Get off this train at Spiez at 15 23. You get another break at Spiez – enjoy the views over Lake Thun.
Catch the 16 12 RE1 train bound for Domodossola via Kandersteg and Brig. Unlike the InterCity and Eurocity trains heading south to Visp and Brig through a very long tunnel, this RE1 train takes the old highly scenic line via Kandersteg.
Make sure you get in the FRONT carriages of the train, those marked ‘Domodossola’. Sit on the right-hand side of the train for the best views. Get off at BRIG at 17 18.
At Brig go straight across the platform from platfom 6 to platform 7 and catch the 17 26 IR 90 bound for Geneve. You get off at SION AT 18 01.
At Sion the bus station is directly outside the train station. Catch the 18 45 route 351 bus to Anzère. This arrives at Anzère ‘centre’ at 19 21. (Note that the local language in Anzère is French.)
Saturday June 28th Anzère to Schiggendorf via Sion, Brig, Andermatt, Disentis, Chur, Zurich and Konstanz.
Catch the 07 55 351 bus from Anzère centre to Sion, arrive 08 33
Catch the 08 41 R91 train to Brig, arriving there at 09 25.
Catch the 10 23 R43 train to Andermatt from the narrow gauge station just outside the main station at Brig. You get to Andermatt at 12 20.
Catch the 12 28 R45 to Disentis, arrive 13 39.
Straight across the platform to the 13 44 RE7 bound for Chur, arriving there at 15 02.
Under the subway to platform 9 for the 15 08 IC3 bound for Zurich, arriving there at 16 22. Sit on the right hand side of this train for splendid views over the Walensee lake and then over Lake Zurich.
Catch the 16 35 IR75 to Konstanz, arriving there at 17 50.
The 700 bus to Ravensburg goes from outside the train station. (Check the location of this stop on Monday 23rd.)
Catch the 18 45 number 700 getting off at Meersburg Kirche at 1923. Take the short walk to the stop outside the ‘SPARKASSE’ (‘Savings Back’) and catch the 19 33 7382 getting to Schiggendorf at 19 47.
(Note that this thread has been posted in the ‘Trip Report’ section. I suspect that Yolanda or one of her moderator colleagues will transfer the thread to the questions and announcements section.)

Reply 5 of 27 • 7 June 2025 at 11:15:52 #2657229Good morning Roger, that’s an excellent suggestion, many thanks for coming up with such a nice route. There are two things, First, I realised I made a mistake In the exact dates, as I mixed them with the dates of my accommodation. SDP1 is just the next day i.e 24 as well as the second one on 29. However, I think that this timetable is also fully compatible on those days too. Second, I realised that from German village, areas near by, for example, Meersberg bus goes directly to Zürich. this means that it is possible to end up at Zürich 9:30 AM but of course, it would take some time to get to the train station, which I assume is nearby. that we can assume that we can be at the train station at 10:00 already. I am not sure which one is better, those German buses that you mentioned taking route up to Constance or a direct bus from Meersberg to Zürich.
if you think the latter is the best, then we need to work out this route from Zürich instead.
however, for the return journey SDP 2, the route you suggested up to Constance might be easier, because from Zurich busses to Meersberg / Friedschaffen go only on designated times.in addition, Since it is not possible to utilise all the days in Switzerland Due to the cancellation of the accommodation, there is now a window open to spend some time in Venice. One possibility is to, Which by the way I would have liked, Use the SDP 3 from German village to Tirano (thereby doing the BE route), however from Tirano to Venice, The best time to take the train from Tirano (of course additional tickets) would be 16:00 Maximum. I figured out that it is possible to start from German village to Tirano at 6:00, to get to Tirano at 15:00 — 15:30. However, this would mean that missing a train in the route would mean losing the pay tickets, which are non-refundable at Tirano. This way arrival to Venice is only possible at 23:00 —23:45. Someone told me that after midnight, it cost about €40 To get from one place to another in Venice, because I assume the local buses are not moving, then. Since our travel is already started and right now, I am writing this from an accommodation, I feel that I should make the decision quickly But not take any risk.
Therefore, I assume that it is more easier to just come back to German village on SDP 3, after doing the BE route (that you worked out from St. Gallen).then purchase additional tickets from Germany to Venice instead.
we could have saved about 35 —45 EUR if we would have use the SDP 3 to get to Tirano and then Venice on additional tickets. however, as you can see that there is a risk involved.
it, also means that we would get a chance, to look at the scenery of BE two times (assuming it is a return journey) or perhaps, not if there is a easier and earlier way to German village. hi, if it is worth it, however, then, will prefer to use the same route to get back to the German village so that the most famous BE journey happens, two times, again, only if it’s worth it. please feel free to comment on this third SDP.
In Venice we think to stay for just 2 or 3 nights.
Reply 6 of 27 • 7 June 2025 at 11:19:46 #2657230Hi Anna,
Good morning and many thanks for this suggestio. at this time, I think, since we are unlimited budget, we could only stay for four nights in Anzére And perhaps we only Spend the time there. As Roger Figured out Some very nice routes on 2 SDPs (Arrival and return), I think those would be enough at this point. we could also if our situation allows since we are elderly explore, only the areas nearby by foot.
Reply 7 of 27 • 7 June 2025 at 13:54:13 #2657657Hello Pearl
It is just not possible to get from Schiggendorf to Campocologno or Tirano AND BACK in one day.
Schiggendorf to Venice?
First note that accommodation in Venice is likely to be EXPENSIVE at the end of June and the beginning of July. If that does not deter you from going to Venice, I would say this.
I would advise very very strongly against trying to travel Schiggendorf-Tirano-Milan-Venice in one day. Realistically you have two possibilities for getting from Schiggendorf to Venice.
If you want to do the trip in one day, go via Zurich, Lugano and Milan. If you are travelling on a day when you have an SDP, that SDP will be valid to the frontier station of Chiasso. Chiasso is 51 kms north of Milan. You will need Italian tickets Chiasso-Milan-Venice (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/italy-switzerland/).
If you are willing for the journey to take two days, go from Schiggendorf to Tirano (via the Bernina route) on a day when you have a valid SDP. Stay overnight in Tirano. Go Tirano-Milan Venice on the second day.
Kind regards
RogerReply 8 of 27 • 10 June 2025 at 10:31:58 #2665160Greetings Roger. thanks a lot for this, and I now understand And saved myself from this terrible mistake After trying to reach Venice on one day on SDP.
Venice I could figure out one budget option to stay.
I think it is much better that we use the third SDP from German village to Switzerland instead and back to German village In order to not miss any scenic trip (i.e. Reserving that SDP for scenic trip in Switzerland). If we use the SDP Zurich — Lugano — Milano — Venice (with additional tickets), I think we would lose meaning of SDP at that point because SDP could be used for scenic trip instead from German village to Switzerland and back.
I I think it would make sense To go from German village to Venice instead directly, one change in bus needed.
Summing up, we need to figure out how to use SDP 3 AND SDP 4 from German village to Switzerland and back to Switzerland. Any suggestions please for the last 2 SDPS.

What you are now wanting is simply suggestions for trips from Schiggendorf into Switzerland for the days you are calling SDP3 and SDP4. Some questions.
Are you actually going to Anzere?
On which dates are SDP3 and SDP4?
Would you be happy leaving Schiggendorf as early 06 55?
Would you be happy not getting back to Schiggendorf until about 19 50 (7 50 pm)?Kind Regards
RogerReply 10 of 27 • 10 June 2025 at 15:17:22 #2666573Dear Roger,
sDp1 and SDP 2, SDP1 to get to Anzére from Germany. SDP2 to get back to Germany from Anzére.
No other accommodation in Switzerland.
SDP 3 (2 July) AND SDP 4 (16 July) both need to start from Germany and end in Germany because accommodation is possibly in Germany only.
What I was wondering was should we used SDP 3 to get from Germany to Zürich and Lugano to Milan to get to Venice? If we do so we risk seeing scenic trip or if there could be a best use of SDP 3 to get to Venice that is one possibility.
But it’s totally okay to buy separate bus tickets later on 4 July to Venice from Germany irrespective of SDP 3, if there could be some good use of SDP 3 (not going to Venice but sightseeing in Switzerland)
Yes those times are okay to start and end in Germany.
Reply 11 of 27 • 10 June 2025 at 17:41:16 #2666589Hello Pearl
I would suggest you travel as follows
SDP Day one go from Schiggendorf to Anzere, using the itinerary set out in my reply 4 to this thread.
SDP Day two go from Anzere back to Schiggendorf using the itinerary set out in my reply 4 to this thread.
SDP3 If you ask me to, I will work out a scenic itinerary for you in Switzerland, Shiggendorf back to Schiggendorf .
On July 4th go from Germany to Venice by long distance bus. As this trip is completely outside Switzerland, you will have to work out the times and fares yourself.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding SDP3
RogerReply 12 of 27 • 13 June 2025 at 12:10:14 #2671197Good noon Roger,
Thank you very much for your message And this suggestion. Accordingly, we purchased the tickets for the long distance, bus to Venice and back.
Yes, please kindly suggest SDP 3 and SDP 4 both of which have to be started from the German village and end there.Kindly note that there is a bus that leaves from Friedschaffen / Meersberg to Zürich few times a day. It seems that arrival to Zürich is possible at 9:30 if the earliest process is taken at 7:00.
Similarly it seems that there are also buses from Zürich to Friedschaffen / Meersberg and the last bus is at about 21:00 but arriving to Friedschaffen / Meersberg at 23:30. This time is also okay to us otherwise.
It seems that earlier is at 17:30 arriving Meersberg at 20:00. however, for the return journey this route at this specific time may not be feasible (because it might be challenge to get back to Zürich bus station earlier at 17:00) and instead a route via Constance station might be more feasible, I’m not sure.

Reply 14 of 27 • 19 June 2025 at 18:37:04 #2688028Hello Roger,
I only was able to now get back to this. Last few days have been intense for us during the current trip, both travel tiredness with very long distance traveling and health.
We therefore took just rest for last 2 days. This what you suggested is very nice, hopefully we shall be able to catch the trains on time with our slow walking.
Just one thing to add. On either SDP 3 or SDP 4 (which is the last SDP), could there be a naturally possible workaround to visit Brunnarden-Neckertal village for half hour? It would then not matter if we arrive back to the accommodation late. I had promised earlier to fellow traveler to show them Brunnarden-Neckertal but unfortunately that could not become possible as our accommodation had gotten canceled in Switzerland.
With utmost thanks and kindest regards.
Reply 15 of 27 • 19 June 2025 at 20:32:15 #2688065Hello Pearl
There is no way you can incorporate Brunnarden-Neckertal village into the itineraries of either SDP3 or SDP4.
(On SDP3 day the 10 05 IR train Voralpen Express bound for Luzern will pass through Brunnadern-Neckertal WITHOUT STOPPING about 15 minutes after leaving Herisau.)
I note what you say about both travel tiredness with very long distance traveling and health. You need to avoid too many days with a LOT of travelling.
Best wishes
RogerReply 16 of 27 • 22 June 2025 at 17:44:53 #2694937Hi Roger,
Many thanks for your prompt reply. Two quick things regarding SDP 2. As mentioned earlier, I mistakenly put 28 June Saturday when it is in fact 29 June Sunday. I hope the timings would remain same?
Second, in SDP 2, there is arrival at Zürich during one of the final legs of the journey. The arrival to Zürich is at 16:22. Then a train to Konstanz is suggested.
I noticed that from Zürich Ausstellungsstrasse 5, 8005 Zürich, there is a direct bus also going to Meersburg at 17:40. The cost of this bus seems to be around 11 EUR per person. Arrival at Meersburg would be at 19:45.
Whereas through Konstanz the arrival to Meersburg would be at 19:23.
I think the suggested route via Konstanz would be better, since the SDP would be valid until Konstanz and I think the cost of the bus from Konstanz could probably be the same.
I totally agree about avoiding long days of traveling, which we learned the hard way.
I am currently writing down the SDP 1 (which is due soon), on paper as could not print out during the travel.
Many thanks.
Reply 17 of 27 • 22 June 2025 at 20:23:09 #2694941Hello Pearl.
As your SDP2 day is Sunday 29th, I have just checked all your timings. There is one minor change. It concerns the Sion to Brig section of your journey. You have a little longer to wait at Sion. You catch the 08 57 IR90 fast train to BRIG, arriving there at 09 32. So you still have 51 minutes to wait for the R43 train to Andermatt leaving at 10 23.
From Zurich to Konstanz, PLEASE take the 16 35 IR75. It is free with your SDP. It will be far more comfortable than the bus. The bus could be delayed by heavy Sunday evening traffic. Furthermore as I pointed out in your earlier thread the through fare from Konstanz to Schiggendoff on the local buses 700 and then 7382 is 6.60 Euros. And note the last local bus 7382 from Meersburg (Sparkasse) to Schiggendorf is at 20 33.
Best wishes

Just to add to Roger’s helpful reply.
If possible, keep tabs on your journeys on the 29th by using the Swiss timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/), in light of any changes. Any changes will be shown in real time.
Hope you are enjoying your trip.

YolandaReply 19 of 27 • 25 June 2025 at 15:18:20 #2723529Dear Roger and Yolanda, good afternoon and best greetings, With utmost thanks to GOD, and many many thanks especially to Roger, The SDP 1 has been done. The views were splendid, and the lake Brienz was magnificent. One addition was done, as it became clear to us that we could still follow the exact same itinerary, however just arriving late at the final destination. The ticket staff at Interlaken Ost directed us back to Brienz to catch the ship back to Interlaken Ost, and then took later R41 train to Brig. Unfortunately by that time phone batteries had died and our plug did not fit in the train 3 pin Switzerland plugs. Therefore from Brig onwards we missed capturing the views.
I would like to express our humble thanks for the efforts and care that has gone in such a wise suggestion of the itinerary.
There is cable car going 2000 meters above this ski resort but unfortunately there is no snow. As well being on budget, so we do not take it. Else, we could just go a little around as much we could on foot.
Looking forward to the SDP2, yes Yolanda I did run the search on SBB APP but it seems that there is a time change as well as due to construction work, it now seems that the connection in SDP 2 is no longer going to Zürich but instead to St. Gallen.
I need to check this again though. If we were to start SDP 2 even earlier, (it becomes valid after 00:00 midnight, in order to maximize the sightseeing, could we incorporate any addition in SDP 2?
I note the last bus to the village in Germany, however a private transportation may be arranged from Meersburg so I hope that’s not any issue if arrival to Meersburg is late, although question remains if it is worth it, otherwise the current SDP 2 is good go as it is.
Thank you once again, SDP 1 has been marvelous and unforgettable memory, it also surprises me with your profound knowledge of Switzerland and their trains as well as the border areas of Germany.Reply 20 of 27 • 25 June 2025 at 16:42:59 #2723531Hello again Pearl
Wonderful to hear about your great trip from Schiggendorf to Anzere! But it must have been a VERY long day!
Trip back planned for Sunday 29th
I would suggest you stick with the itinerary given in reply 4.
This is going to be another very long and potentially very tiring trip. (And you have two more long trips on July 2nd and (I think) July 4th.)
There is an earlier bus from Anzere, leaving Anzere (centre) at 06 51 bound for Botyre(Ayent) where you change buses. The connecting bus gets to Sion at 07 30.
After that your journey would be the same as in my reply 4, except everything is an hour earlier.
I checked again http://www.sbb.ch for Sunday 29th, and I cannot see any construction work affecting the railway stages of your journey.
I would stick to the routing via Zurich. I deliberately sent you that way for two reasons. Have a map of Switzerland in front of you.
Firstly, the direct main railway line Chur to Zurich along the Walensee and Zurichsee is extremely scenic.
Secondly, in my itinerary in reply 13 for SDP Day 3 (July 2nd), the route back from Landquart takes you via St Gallen.
If on SDP Day 2 you went from Chur to Konstanz via St Gallen, you would miss the beautiful line along the Walensee and Land Zurich; you would instead (on days two and three) be going over the same railway tracks twice.
Very best wishes
