April: Augstmatthorn hike or similar ridge walk to do in half a day?

Short summary – read this first

Dave is planning a trip to Lauterbrunnen in April and is interested in ridge walks, particularly the harder kulm trail. He wants to know how far he needs to hike from the restaurant at the top to reach a ridge and whether any ridge walks can be completed in half a day, given that many higher elevation hikes are closed in April due to snow.

Key takeaways:
  • The Augstmatthorn hike will likely be closed in April, with the typical hiking season starting in June.
  • Consider lower altitude hikes if you want to hike in April, as many trails are inaccessible due to snow and mud.
  • Look at a hiking guide for options that list trails by region and altitude for better planning.

    Hello,

We have limited time in Lauterbrunnen.

We would love to do some kind of ridge walk but I appreciate this may not be possible.

Looking at the harder kulm trail, via the funicular. How far from the restaurant at the top do you need to go along the trail before you get to a ridge?

Also, is this possible in April?

Are there any other ridge walks nearby, possible to do in half a day?

We have a car so can drive to an appropriate location.

    Thank you, Dave

    Hi Dave,

The Augstmatthorn hike is unlikely to be open for hiking in April.  Typical season is June to October.

You’ll be hard pushed to find a ridge walk that will be open I am afraid during April. Many of the higher elevation hikes are often closed by snow and/or mud until mid-June.

If a hike is must, the lower altitude hikes are your best bet.

Take a look at our hiking guide  where you can search by region, and it will show you the altitudes of the hikes too.  Here’s the link:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
