Autumn colors in Switzerland – itinerary

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Albi is planning a 5-night trip to Zurich in mid-October with a focus on enjoying autumn colors, but without much time for hiking. They are considering day trips to places like Lausanne, Montreux, or Bern, and have questions about where to go for the best foliage and details about the current Swiss Travel Pass discount.

Key takeaways:

Visit the vineyards in Lausanne for beautiful views and consider Lake Thun for a scenic experience under three hours. If you want a lakeside resort, choose Montreux, but for a mountain village experience, opt for Gruyeres. For buying the Swiss Travel Pass, it's better to purchase online in advance to take advantage of discounts rather than at the station.

    Hi,

We will arrive Zurich for 5 nights around mid Oct 2022. We will purchase 4 days Swiss Pass Travel and tentatively will use Zurich as base to do day trip. We will be back next year around mid June for 2 weeks, so we will cover more. But for this season, we just look for where to find the best color. We don’t have time for hiking and long scenic train ride but less than 3 hours is doable.

If there is only once choice, where should I go from the below:

Lausanne vineyard or Eglise de Gleresse at Ligerz (lake Bielersee)?

For the lake, Thun or Brienz?

    Montreux or Gruyeres?

For the village, Bern or Spiez?

One question about Swiss Travel Pass, it is currently 20% off for 4 days. Is it for only purchase only or it is the same promotion to buy at Zurich station?

Also, are hanging flowers baskets at the bridge still there, or it is over?

Thank in advance for your reply!

    Albi

Lausanne vineyard or Eglise de Gleresse at Ligerz (lake Bielersee)?

Ligerz – use the station while you still can (it is closing at some point ass the railway is being put in a tunnel

For the lake, Thun or Brienz?

    Lake Thun

    Montreux or Gruyeres?

Very different – choice is up to you, Montreux is a 19th century lakeside resort, Gruyeres is a mountain village

For the village, Bern or Spiez?

    Neither is a village.

Bern is Switzerland’s capital city. Spiez is a small town on the lake

    Hi Albi,

you can find a foliage map of Switzerland here. Yellow means “moderate discoloration”, red means “severe discoloration”, brown means “leaf fall”. This might be useful. But note, it is only a prediction.

I hope this helps, I’ve also added a couple of links in the answer of 1960man, please visit them if you would like to know more about those places.

Thank you all for your valuable information! We planned to visit back in June 2020, then everything cancelled due to covid-19. Hope to make it this time.

    Thanks

Hi Albi, good you’ll finally get to visit Switzerland! I hope your autumn trip makes up for the previous plans that got cancelled.

As for where to get your discounted Swiss Travel Pass: the recommend purchase option is mentioned at http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/swiss-travel-pass-promotion-until-31-oct-2022. And in general, there are more advantages to buying online in advance than after arrival at a station. You’ll read about it at http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/wheretobuy.
