Basel to London by train with chance in Paris

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Zairy is asking about the best way to connect from Basel to Paris, and then to London. They want to know how much time they should leave between trains in Paris, especially in case of delays. It’s important for Zairy to plan this before purchasing their tickets.

Key takeaways:

Leave at least 2 hours for your layover in Paris to ensure a smooth transfer to Eurostar, considering the 30-minute check-in requirement. The Eurostar and other high-speed train operators have an agreement for delays, so you should be safe if you miss your initial connection. Check train schedules and ticket options online for the best rates and itineraries.

    Hi Zairy,

You’ll normally arrive at the Gare de Lyon and depart from Gare du Nord. They’re connected by the RER train line D. The ride itself takes 10 minutes or so, but you do need more time, also for delays as you said. If you miss the train you’ll need to arrange for a new reservation at the ticket office. Tickets and train schedules can be found through the websites listed on this page: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/france/pric e

    Hi Arno,

Thank you for the reply.Would the Eurostar train allow me to board the next if i miss the train if i buy the below tickets? Or i will have to buy a new ticket if i miss the train?

London – Amsterdam – one way

    Amsterdam – Paris -One way

    Paris to Basel – Return

    Paris to London- One Way.

Any other suggestions? Should i leave a 4 hour gap or less to be save? Thank you.

2 hours is about the minimum for changing in Paris to Eurostar – the artificial 30 minute check in for Eurostar is a time penalty not seen on other European train connections.

Eurostar and TGV/Thalys etc high speed operators have a mutual train delay agreement so you should be safe.

I can’t imagine not wanting to spend at least a few hours in Paris, if I was passing thru. ; ^ )

I’ m afreaid for many people it’s just a place to change trains!

For most of my 58 years I’ve been passing through, in the ‘old days’ between Paris Nord and Gare de Lyon by metro to connect from a boat train from Boulogne/Calais to a train to Geneva, or more recently because Eurostar runs from UK to Paris.

What is badly missing is a direct Eurostar from Geneva to London
