Bernina Express St. Moritz-Tirano and back by regional trains

Short summary – read this first

Dan is planning a trip in July next year to take the Bernina Express from St. Moritz to Tirano, Italy, and he wants to know if it's possible to return by regional train while stopping at recommended towns along the way. He seeks advice on scenic stops for views and food during his return trip.

Key takeaways:
  • You can take the Bernina Express one way and a regional train back, making scenic stops along the way.
  • Consider stopping at Alp Grum for amazing views and a restaurant, or at Poschiavo and Le Prese for delightful small towns.
  • For additional experiences, stop at Bernina Diavolezza for a cable car ride or Morteratsch for an easy hike to the glacier.
  • Swiss tickets and passes are valid all the way to Tirano, making travel convenient.

In July next year I’d like to get the Bernina Express from St Moritz to Tirano Italy then return by a regional train.
    Is this possible?
Are there any towns on the return trip that you would recommend stopping at for views, food etc?
    Thank you
    Dan

    Hello again Dan

It will help if you get out a map showing the route of the Bernina railway in detail.  It is perfectly possible to go one way on the Bernina Express and the other on the regional trains.

    https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/bernina-express/#directions

Looking at the map you will see that on leaving St Moritz, the Bernina line quickly passes two other villages, Celerina and Pontresina.  After Pontresina there is no significant resident population until you reach Poschiavo, a delightful small town.  There are however intermediate stations, notably at Bernina Ospizio and Alp Grum.  The Ospizio station is mainly for hikers.  Alp Grum is a spectacular viewing point, with a restaurant!

After Poschiavo there is a delightful village called Le Prese.  There are then three smaller villages before you cross into Italy and reach Tirano.  (All Swiss tickets, passes etc are valid as far as Tirano.)  Tirano is a delightful small town.

On the 2025 timetable there is a Bernina Express leaving St Moritz at 09 17 and arriving Tirano at 11 32.  (The train stops at Alp Grum for twelve minutes)  I think we can assume that there will be a similarly timed train on the 2026 timetable.

Suggested plan. Take a regional train back from Tirano to Le Prese, Poschiavo or Alp Grum.  Have a late lunch at one of those locations.  (The choice might depend on the weather!).

    Kind regards
    Roger

    Hi Dan!

I totally agree with Roger’s suggestions to take a break at Alp Grüm. The views of the Poschiavo Valley and Palü Glacier are fantastic.
