Hi JCNROB and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Typically not in that direction no. The Bernina Express usually leaves around 10am from Tirano and 08:30 from Chur. Use the timetable for the date you are wanting to travel to see if it can work – the train is labeled BEX on the timetable.

You can just take any regional train back to Tirano though – they follow the exact same route.

So can you help get my head around how we do it. If we are staying in Tirano, can we get a train to Chur? The timetable seems to indicate it takes 4.5 hours, so we’d have to be on the train at 4 a.m. to be in Chur by 8.30. Do we have to drive to Chur and then take the train? Do we have to be there the night before? I haven’t travelled extensively in Switzerland so it’s all a bit of a mystery.

What time of year are you travelling?

The only Bernina Express which goes to Chur departs 14:25.

The 10:06 only goes to St Moritz. You can go there and then get regular train back to Tirano or regular train to Chur and back to Tirano.

Where are you coming from to get to Tirano in the first place? Are you travelling elsewhere in Switzerland?

We’re staying in Tirano to give us access to the Poschiavo Valley, where our grandfather was born.

Where are you coming from to get to Tirano in the first place? Are you travelling elsewhere in Switzerland? There may be a more efficient way of fitting in the Bernina Express.

You can in fact travel to St Moritz and back to Tirano in one day taking the Bernina Express in both directions if that’s what you want. You’ll find the timetable lower down on this page http://www.rhb.ch/en/panorami c-trains/bernina-express#info.

The Bernina Express leaves Chur at 08:32. You would need to stay in Chur the night before (or a town much closer to Chur than Tirano) but I’m not sure if you want/can do that?

You can take the Bernina Express at 10:06 as far as St. Moritz from Tirano then take a regional train on to Chur. Then take a regional train back to Tirano later that day (lots of departures to choose from).

The 14:25 departure from Tirano is direct to Chur (so the entire trip is on the Bernina Express train). You’ll have to return to Tirano after 7pm though on a regional train.
